    Incidence = (Number of NEW cases during a period / Population at risk during that period) × 1000. It measures the rate of new disease occurrence.

  10. State the formula for Point Prevalence.

    Prevalence = (Number of EXISTING cases at a point in time / Total population examined at that time) × 100. It measures the burden of existing disease.

  11. How are prevalence, incidence, and disease duration related?

    Prevalence ≈ Incidence × Duration (P = I × D). Prevalence rises with higher incidence or longer disease duration.

  12. Differentiate incidence and prevalence.

    Incidence counts only NEW cases over a period (measures risk/rate). Prevalence counts ALL existing cases at a time point (measures burden). Chronic diseases have high prevalence; acute diseases reflect incidence.

  13. What is the difference between a ratio, a proportion, and a rate?

    Ratio: one quantity relative to another (a:b), numerator not part of denominator. Proportion: a part of the whole (numerator included in denominator), no time. Rate: a proportion with a specified time component.

  14. Define attack rate and where it is used.

    Attack rate = (cases of disease / population at risk) × 100 during an outbreak. It is a cumulative incidence used in epidemics/food-poisoning of limited duration.

  16. What is a cross-sectional (prevalence) study?

  17. Compare cohort and case-control studies in direction and measure of association.

    Cohort: exposure→outcome (prospective), measures Relative Risk (RR), good for rare exposures. Case-control: outcome→exposure (retrospective), measures Odds Ratio (OR), good for rare diseases.

    An experimental study where participants are randomly allocated to intervention or control groups. Randomization minimizes confounding and bias, making it the gold standard for causation.

    RR = Incidence in exposed / Incidence in unexposed. RR=1 no association; RR>1 exposure increases risk; RR<1 protective effect.
