What is discount and on which price is it calculated?
Discount is a reduction on the Marked Price (MP). Discount = MP − SP; Discount% = (Discount/MP)×100.
A shopkeeper marks goods 40% above cost and gives 25% discount. What is his profit/loss %?
SP = 1.40 × 0.75 × CP = 1.05 CP, so 5% profit.
What is the formula for Simple Interest?
SI = (P × R × T)/100, where P = principal, R = rate% per annum, T = time in years.
What is the Compound Interest amount formula for annual compounding?
A = P(1 + R/100)^T, and CI = A − P.
What is the difference between CI and SI for 2 years on principal P at rate R%?
Difference = P × (R/100)².
For half-yearly compounding, how are rate and time adjusted?
Rate becomes R/2 per half-year and time becomes 2T half-years: A = P(1 + R/200)^(2T).
What is the formula for the average of n numbers?
Average = (Sum of observations) / (Number of observations).
What is the average of the first n natural numbers?
Average = (n + 1)/2.
State the alligation rule (rule of mixtures).
(Quantity of cheaper)/(Quantity of dearer) = (Price of dearer − Mean price)/(Mean price − Price of cheaper).
A vessel has milk and water in ratio 3:2 and from it some is replaced by water repeatedly — what governs the remaining milk?
After replacing/removing operations, remaining quantity = Initial × (1 − replaced fraction)^n for n operations (replacement formula).
What are the basic relations among speed, distance and time?
Speed = Distance/Time; Distance = Speed × Time; Time = Distance/Speed.
How do you convert km/h to m/s and vice versa?
km/h to m/s: multiply by 5/18. m/s to km/h: multiply by 18/5.
What is the average speed for equal distances covered at speeds x and y?
Average speed = 2xy/(x + y) (harmonic mean).
How long does a train of length L take to cross a stationary pole versus a platform of length P?
Pole: time = L/speed. Platform: time = (L + P)/speed.
In boats and streams, what are downstream and upstream speeds (boat u, stream v)?
Downstream = u + v; Upstream = u − v. Boat speed = (down+up)/2; Stream speed = (down−up)/2.
If A does a work in x days and B in y days, how long together?
Time together = xy/(x + y) days; their combined one-day work = 1/x + 1/y.
What is the relationship between efficiency and time in work problems?
Efficiency is inversely proportional to time taken. If A is twice as efficient as B, A takes half the time.
A pipe fills a tank in a hours, another empties it in b hours. Net time to fill when both open?
Net fill rate = 1/a − 1/b per hour; time to fill = ab/(b − a) hours (if a < b).
Two inlet pipes fill a tank in p and q hours. Time to fill together?
Time = pq/(p + q) hours.
If the ratio of present ages of A and B is m:n and sum of ages is S, how do you find each age?
A = S × m/(m+n), B = S × n/(m+n).
In age problems, how do you represent ages 'x years ago' and 'x years hence'?
x years ago: subtract x from present age. x years hence: add x to present age. Set up equations from the given conditions.
A father is 3 times as old as his son; in 12 years he will be twice as old. How to set the equations?
Let son = s, father = 3s. Then 3s + 12 = 2(s + 12) → 3s + 12 = 2s + 24 → s = 12, father = 36.
What is the sum of the first n natural numbers and sum of their squares?
Sum = n(n+1)/2; Sum of squares = n(n+1)(2n+1)/6.
What is the difference between a number reversed and the original two-digit number?
For a two-digit number 10a+b, reversing gives 10b+a; the difference is 9(a−b), always a multiple of 9.
