What is the divisibility rule for 8?
A number is divisible by 8 if the number formed by its last three digits is divisible by 8.
What is the divisibility rule for 11?
A number is divisible by 11 if the difference between the sum of digits in odd positions and the sum of digits in even positions is 0 or a multiple of 11.
Define a prime number and give the only even prime.
A prime number has exactly two distinct factors: 1 and itself. The only even prime is 2.
What is the difference between co-prime numbers and twin primes?
Co-prime numbers have HCF = 1 (no common factor besides 1), e.g. 8 and 15. Twin primes are pairs of primes differing by 2, e.g. (11, 13).
How are HCF and LCM of two numbers related to the numbers themselves?
HCF Ć LCM = Product of the two numbers.
What is the divisibility rule for 3 and for 9?
Divisible by 3 if the sum of digits is divisible by 3; divisible by 9 if the sum of digits is divisible by 9.
In simplification, what does the BODMAS order of operations stand for?
Brackets, Of (order/powers), Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction ā performed left to right within the same level.
In a BODMAS chain, in what order are the four bracket types solved?
Innermost first: ( ) round/parentheses, then { } curly braces, then [ ] square brackets ā vinculum (bar) before all of them.
What is the value of the square of numbers ending in 5, e.g. 35²?
For (a5)², take a Ć (a+1) and append 25. So 35² = 3Ć4=12, then 25 ā 1225.
List the squares from 11 to 15.
11²=121, 12²=144, 13²=169, 14²=196, 15²=225.
List the cubes from 1 to 6.
1³=1, 2³=8, 3³=27, 4³=64, 5³=125, 6³=216.
What is the approximate value of ā2, ā3 and ā5?
ā2 ā 1.414, ā3 ā 1.732, ā5 ā 2.236.
What is the formula for the square root of a number using the relation between squares?
ā(a²) = |a|; and ā(ab) = āa Ć āb, ā(a/b) = āa / āb (for b ā 0).
How do you convert a recurring decimal like 0.333... to a fraction?
A single repeating digit 0.xĢ = x/9. So 0.333... = 3/9 = 1/3; 0.4545... = 45/99 = 5/11.
Convert 5/8 to a decimal and a percentage.
5/8 = 0.625 = 62.5%.
What fraction equals 12.5%, 16ā % and 33ā %?
12.5% = 1/8, 16ā % = 1/6, 33ā % = 1/3.
How do you find what percentage one number is of another?
Percentage = (part / whole) Ć 100.
If a value increases by x% and then decreases by x%, what is the net change?
There is a net decrease of (x²/100)%.
What is the successive percentage change formula for two changes a% and b%?
Net % change = a + b + (ab/100), using signs (+ for increase, ā for decrease).
A number is increased by 25%. By what percent must the new number be decreased to get back the original?
Decrease by 20%. (If increased by x%, the reversal decrease is [x/(100+x)]Ć100; here 25/125Ć100 = 20%.)
What is the difference between ratio and proportion?
A ratio compares two quantities (a:b). A proportion states that two ratios are equal (a:b = c:d), where aĆd = bĆc (product of extremes = product of means).
