If the ratio of ages is given and a sum/difference is provided, how do you solve age problems?
Let ages be the ratio terms multiplied by a common factor x, form an equation from the given condition, solve for x, then compute each age.
What is the basic Time and Work formula?
Work = Rate × Time. If one person does a job in n days, one day's work = 1/n. Combined rate of A and B = 1/a + 1/b.
In Pipes and Cisterns, how are filling and emptying pipes combined?
Filling pipes add to the rate (1/a + 1/b...) and emptying pipes subtract (−1/c). Net rate gives the time to fill = 1/(net rate).
State the fundamental speed–time–distance relationship and unit conversions.
Speed = Distance/Time. To convert km/h to m/s multiply by 5/18; to convert m/s to km/h multiply by 18/5.
What is relative speed for objects moving in the same and opposite directions?
Same direction: relative speed = difference of speeds. Opposite directions: relative speed = sum of speeds.
How long does a train of length L take to cross a stationary pole versus a platform of length P?
Crossing a pole: time = L/speed. Crossing a platform: time = (L + P)/speed.
State the boats and streams formulas for downstream and upstream speed.
Downstream speed = (boat speed + stream speed); Upstream speed = (boat speed − stream speed). Boat speed = (down+up)/2; stream speed = (down−up)/2.
In tabular data interpretation, what is the first step before calculating?
Read the table title, row and column headings, and units carefully to understand what each value represents before performing any calculation.
What is the key difference between a bar graph and a line graph in DI?
Bar graphs use rectangular bars to compare discrete categories/quantities; line graphs use points joined by lines to show trends and changes over a continuous variable like time.
How do you read values from a pie chart given in percentages?
Each sector's value = (sector percentage/100) × total. If given in degrees, value = (sector angle/360) × total. The whole circle = 360° = 100%.
What characterizes a caselet (paragraph-based) DI question?
Data is presented as text (a paragraph) rather than a chart/table; you must extract the numbers and relationships from the wording, often building your own table to solve.
How do you approach a missing-data or mixed DI set?
Use the given totals, percentages, ratios, or relationships to back-calculate the missing values first, then answer the questions; mixed DI combines two or more data formats.
What is the standard form of a quadratic equation and its roots formula?
ax² + bx + c = 0 (a ≠ 0). Roots = [−b ± √(b² − 4ac)] / (2a).
For roots of ax² + bx + c = 0, what are the sum and product of roots?
Sum of roots = −b/a; Product of roots = c/a.
What does the discriminant (b² − 4ac) tell you about the roots?
If > 0, roots are real and distinct; if = 0, roots are real and equal; if < 0, roots are imaginary (no real roots).
How do you solve a pair of linear equations in two variables?
Use substitution, elimination, or cross-multiplication. A unique solution exists when a1/a2 ≠ b1/b2 (lines intersect).
State the formulas for permutation (nPr) and combination (nCr).
nPr = n!/(n−r)! (order matters); nCr = n!/[r!(n−r)!] (order doesn't matter). Note nPr = nCr × r!.
What is the basic probability formula and its value range?
Probability = (Number of favourable outcomes)/(Total number of outcomes). Its value lies between 0 and 1 inclusive; P(not E) = 1 − P(E).
Give the area and perimeter formulas for a rectangle and a circle.
Rectangle: area = length × breadth, perimeter = 2(l + b). Circle: area = πr², circumference = 2πr.
State the area of a triangle and the area of a square.
Triangle: area = ½ × base × height. Square: area = side², perimeter = 4 × side, diagonal = side × √2.
Give the volume and total surface area of a cuboid.
Volume = l × b × h. Total surface area = 2(lb + bh + hl). For a cube of side a: volume = a³, TSA = 6a².
Give the volume and curved surface area of a cylinder and a sphere.
Cylinder: volume = πr²h, CSA = 2πrh. Sphere: volume = (4/3)πr³, surface area = 4πr².
In number series, what are the most common patterns to check?
Constant difference (arithmetic), constant ratio (geometric/multiplication), squares/cubes, prime numbers, alternating patterns, and combined operations (e.g., ×2 then +1).
How do you identify the wrong term in a 'find the odd one out' number series?
Establish the governing rule from most terms, then locate the single term that breaks the pattern; that term is the wrong one and should be replaced by the value the rule predicts.
