What is a network topology? Name three common types.
The physical/logical arrangement of devices in a network. Common types: Bus, Star, Ring, Mesh, and Tree.
What is the difference between the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW)?
The Internet is the global network of interconnected computers (the infrastructure); the WWW is a service running on the Internet - a system of linked web pages accessed via browsers.
What is a web browser? Give two examples.
Software used to access and view websites on the WWW. Examples: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox (also Edge, Safari).
What does URL stand for and what is its purpose?
Uniform Resource Locator - the unique address of a web page or resource on the Internet (e.g., https://www.sbi.co.in).
What is a search engine? Give two examples.
A program/website that searches the Internet and returns relevant results for a user's query. Examples: Google, Bing (also Yahoo, DuckDuckGo).
In an email, what is the difference between CC and BCC?
CC (Carbon Copy) sends a visible copy to recipients seen by all; BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) sends a copy to recipients whose addresses are hidden from others.
What are the protocols used for sending and receiving email?
SMTP is used to send email; POP3 and IMAP are used to receive/retrieve email.
What is a computer virus and a worm?
A virus is malicious code that attaches to files and needs a host/user action to spread; a worm is self-replicating malware that spreads across networks on its own without a host.
What is phishing?
A cyber attack using fake emails, messages, or websites that impersonate trusted sources to trick users into revealing sensitive data like passwords or bank/card details.
What is a firewall?
A security system (hardware or software) that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic, blocking unauthorized access to a network or computer.
What is the difference between malware and ransomware?
Malware is any malicious software (viruses, worms, trojans, spyware); ransomware is a specific type that encrypts/locks a victim's data and demands payment to restore access.
What is a DBMS and a database?
A database is an organized collection of related data; a DBMS (Database Management System) is software used to store, manage, retrieve, and manipulate that data (e.g., MySQL, Oracle, MS Access).
In a relational database, what is a table, a record (row), and a field (column)?
A table stores data in rows and columns; a record/row is a single complete entry (e.g., one customer); a field/column is a single attribute (e.g., name or account number).
What is a primary key in a database?
A field (or set of fields) that uniquely identifies each record in a table and cannot contain duplicate or null values.

CPU = Central Processing Unit; GUI = Graphical User Interface; HTTP = HyperText Transfer Protocol; HTML = HyperText Markup Language.

Automated Teller Machine - an electronic banking outlet that lets customers perform transactions like cash withdrawal, deposit, and balance inquiry without a human teller.
In Indian banking, what are NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS used for?
They are electronic fund transfer systems: NEFT (batch settlement), RTGS (real-time, high-value transfers), and IMPS (instant, 24x7 transfers).
What do UPI and IFSC stand for in Indian banking?
UPI = Unified Payments Interface (instant mobile-based payments); IFSC = Indian Financial System Code (an 11-character code identifying a bank branch for electronic transfers).
What is a programming language? Name the three broad types.
A formal set of instructions to communicate with a computer. Three types: Machine language (binary, low-level), Assembly language (mnemonics), and High-level language (e.g., C, Java, Python).
What is the difference between a compiler and an interpreter?
A compiler translates the entire high-level program into machine code at once before execution; an interpreter translates and executes the program line by line.
What is an algorithm and a flowchart in programming?
An algorithm is a step-by-step finite procedure to solve a problem; a flowchart is a diagrammatic (graphical) representation of that algorithm using standard symbols.
What is machine language and why is it called the only language a computer directly understands?
Machine language is code written in binary (0s and 1s); it is the only language the CPU executes directly without translation, which is why all other languages must be converted into it.
