  2. State Hess's law of constant heat summation.

    The total enthalpy change of a reaction is the same whether it occurs in one step or several steps; enthalpy is a state function.

  3. Define enthalpy of combustion.

    The enthalpy change when one mole of a substance is completely burnt in excess oxygen; it is always negative (exothermic).

  4. Define enthalpy of formation.

    The enthalpy change when one mole of a compound is formed from its elements in their standard states.

  5. Write the relation between Kp and Kc for a gaseous equilibrium.

    Kp = Kc (RT)^(delta n_g), where delta n_g = moles of gaseous products minus moles of gaseous reactants.

  6. State Le Chatelier's principle.

    If a system at equilibrium is disturbed by a change in concentration, pressure or temperature, the equilibrium shifts to counteract the change.

  7. Define pH and give the formula.

    pH = -log[H+]; it measures the acidity of a solution. Neutral pH = 7 at 25 C.

  8. What is the ionic product of water (Kw) at 25 C?

    Kw = [H+][OH-] = 1.0 x 10^-14 at 25 C.

  9. State the common ion effect.

    The suppression of ionization of a weak electrolyte by adding a strong electrolyte that shares a common ion.

  10. Write the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation for an acidic buffer.

    pH = pKa + log([salt]/[acid]).

  11. State Raoult's law for a solution of two volatile liquids.

    The partial vapour pressure of each component is proportional to its mole fraction: P_total = P_A x_A + P_B x_B.

  12. Name the four colligative properties.

    Relative lowering of vapour pressure, elevation of boiling point, depression of freezing point, and osmotic pressure.

  13. Write the formula for osmotic pressure.

    pi = CRT = (n/V)RT, where C is molar concentration of solute.

  14. State Henry's law for gas solubility.

    The solubility (mole fraction) of a gas in a liquid is directly proportional to its partial pressure: p = K_H x.

  15. What is the van't Hoff factor (i) and what does i > 1 indicate?

    i = observed colligative property / calculated value; i > 1 indicates dissociation of the solute.

  16. What is the difference between physisorption and chemisorption?

    Physisorption involves weak van der Waals forces, is reversible and low-enthalpy; chemisorption involves chemical bonds, is irreversible and high-enthalpy.

  17. What is the Tyndall effect?

    The scattering of light by colloidal particles, making the path of a light beam visible through a colloid.

  18. Define an emulsion and give an example.

    A colloidal dispersion of one liquid in another immiscible liquid; e.g. milk (oil/fat in water).

  19. Write the Nernst equation for an electrode at 298 K.

    E = E° - (0.059/n) log Q, where n is the number of electrons transferred and Q is the reaction quotient.

  20. State Faraday's first law of electrolysis.

    The mass of substance deposited at an electrode is directly proportional to the quantity of electricity (charge) passed through the electrolyte.

  21. How is the EMF of a cell calculated from electrode potentials?

    E°cell = E°cathode - E°anode (both as reduction potentials).

  22. What is the integrated rate equation for a first-order reaction?

    k = (2.303/t) log([A0]/[A]); the half-life t(1/2) = 0.693/k is independent of initial concentration.

  23. State the Arrhenius equation relating rate constant to temperature.

    k = A e^(-Ea/RT), where A is the pre-exponential factor and Ea is the activation energy.

  24. What is the n-factor and oxidation number change for an oxidizing agent in a redox reaction?

    An oxidizing agent gains electrons and is reduced; its oxidation number decreases. The n-factor equals the number of electrons gained per molecule.
