1. What is the primary purpose of the SAP PP (Production Planning) module?

   SAP PP manages and controls the manufacturing process — it handles planning of production (demand, MRP, capacity) and execution (production/process orders), integrating with MM, SD, QM, and FICO to ensure materials are produced in the right quantity, at the right time, and at the right cost.

2. In SAP PP, what are the two broad phases of the production cycle?

   Planning (Demand Management, MRP, capacity planning, planned orders) and Execution/Shop-floor control (converting planned orders to production/process orders, confirmations, goods movements, and settlement).

3. What SAP transaction code opens the standard SAP Easy Access menu (the initial navigation screen)?

   SESSION_MANAGER — but users typically reach it automatically at logon; the Easy Access menu is the default entry screen from which transaction codes and menu paths are launched.

4. In SAP navigation, what is the difference between the /n and /o prefixes entered in the command field?

   /n ends the current transaction and starts a new one in the same session/window; /o opens the transaction in a new session (window) while keeping the current one open. /nex ends the session without a confirmation prompt.

5. What is the SAP Material Master and why is it central to PP?

   The Material Master (MM01/MM02/MM03) is the central repository of all data about a material, organized into views (Basic Data, MRP 1-4, Work Scheduling, Accounting, etc.). PP relies especially on the MRP and Work Scheduling views for planning and production.

6. Which Material Master views are most important for the PP module?

   MRP 1, MRP 2, MRP 3, MRP 4 (planning, procurement, forecasting/strategy, BOM/production versions) and the Work Scheduling view (used for in-house production/order data).

7. What is a Bill of Materials (BOM) in SAP PP?

   A BOM is a complete, structured list of the components (with quantities and units) required to produce a finished or semi-finished product. It is created with CS01, changed with CS02, displayed with CS03.

8. Name the main BOM categories in SAP.

   Material BOM, Equipment BOM, Functional Location BOM, Document BOM, and Sales Order BOM. In PP the Material BOM is the most commonly used.

9. What is the difference between a single-level and a multi-level BOM?

   A single-level BOM lists only the immediate components of one assembly. A multi-level BOM explodes each assembly down through all sub-assemblies to raw materials, showing the full product structure hierarchy.

10. What is a BOM usage in SAP, and give an example?

    BOM usage defines the area/purpose for which the BOM is valid (controls which item statuses are allowed). Example: Usage 1 = Production, Usage 2 = Engineering/Design, Usage 3 = Universal, Usage 5 = Sales.

11. What is a Work Center in SAP PP?

    A Work Center (CR01/CR02/CR03) is the place/resource (machine, person, line) where operations are performed. It provides data for scheduling, capacity planning, and costing, and is linked to a cost center and standard value key.

12. What key categories of data does a Work Center supply to the production process?

    Scheduling data (formulas for setup/machine/labor times), Capacity data (available capacity, utilization, shifts), and Costing data (cost center + activity types for valuing operations).

13. What is a Routing in SAP PP?

    A Routing (CA01/CA02/CA03) describes the sequence of operations needed to manufacture a material, specifying for each operation the work center, standard times, and component allocation. It drives lead-time scheduling and costing.

14. What is the relationship between a Routing, its operations, and Work Centers?

    A Routing contains an ordered sequence of operations; each operation is assigned to a Work Center that provides the times and cost data. Components from the BOM are allocated to specific operations for staging.

15. What is a Production Version in SAP PP and what does it link?

    A Production Version (maintained in MRP 4 / C223) defines a valid combination of a BOM alternative and a Routing/Rate Routing used to produce a material for a given validity period and lot-size range. It is mandatory for repetitive manufacturing and for many APO/PP-DS scenarios.

16. Why can a material have more than one Production Version?

    Different production versions represent alternative ways to make the same material (different BOM alternatives, routings, lines, or lot-size ranges), letting the system select the appropriate method based on quantity, date, or line availability.

17. What is Demand Management in SAP PP?

20. Compare Make-to-Stock (MTS) and Make-to-Order (MTO) production.

    MTS produces finished goods to anonymous stock based on forecast/PIRs before orders arrive (strategies 10/40). MTO produces specifically against individual sales orders, with stock kept as sales-order stock and no anonymous warehouse buildup (strategy 20/50).
