What is the definition of voltage (electromotive force)?
The electrical pressure or potential difference that pushes electrons through a circuit, measured in volts (V).
State Ohm's Law and its three forms.
E = I x R. Therefore I = E / R and R = E / I, where E is voltage (volts), I is current (amps), and R is resistance (ohms).
What is the power formula (Watt's Law) relating power, voltage, and current?
P = I x E (power in watts equals current in amps times voltage in volts). Also P = I squared x R and P = E squared / R.
How does current behave in a series circuit versus a parallel circuit?
In a series circuit the current is the same through every component. In a parallel circuit the voltage is the same across each branch while current divides among branches.
How is total resistance calculated in a series circuit?
Add all the individual resistances: Rt = R1 + R2 + R3 + ... Total resistance is always larger than the largest single resistor.
How is total resistance calculated for resistors in parallel?
Rt = 1 / (1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3 ...). Total resistance is always smaller than the smallest branch resistor. For two resistors, Rt = (R1 x R2) / (R1 + R2).
What is the difference between AC and DC current?
DC (direct current) flows in one constant direction; AC (alternating current) periodically reverses direction. North American utility AC is 60 Hz.
What does frequency mean in an AC circuit and what is the standard US value?
Frequency is the number of complete cycles per second, measured in hertz (Hz). The US standard is 60 Hz.
In a 120/240V single-phase system, how is 240V obtained?
By connecting across the two ungrounded (hot) legs. 120V is obtained from either hot leg to the grounded neutral.
What does PPE stand for and give common electrical examples.
Personal Protective Equipment. Examples: insulated rubber gloves with leather protectors, arc-rated clothing, face shields, hard hats, and safety glasses.
What is lockout/tagout (LOTO) and why is it used?
A safety procedure to de-energize equipment, lock the disconnect in the off position, and tag it so it cannot be re-energized while work is performed, protecting workers from unexpected startup.
What is an arc flash?
An explosive release of energy caused by an electrical fault arcing through the air, producing intense heat, light, and pressure that can cause severe burns and injury.
What is the difference between a Class A, B, and C fire extinguisher use?
Class A: ordinary combustibles (wood, paper). Class B: flammable liquids. Class C: energized electrical equipment. Use Class C (or ABC) on electrical fires.
What three steps verify a circuit is de-energized before work?
Test the meter on a known live source, test the de-energized circuit, then re-test the meter on the known live source to confirm the meter still works (test-before-touch / live-dead-live).
Why must you never use a wet or damp tool or stand in water near energized equipment?
Water greatly reduces resistance and increases conductivity, raising the risk of electric shock or electrocution.
What does a voltmeter measure and how is it connected?
It measures voltage (potential difference) and is connected in parallel across the component or points being measured.
What does an ammeter measure and how is it connected?
It measures current in amperes and is connected in series with the circuit (or a clamp meter is placed around a single conductor).
How is an ohmmeter used safely?
It measures resistance and must only be used on de-energized, isolated circuits; applying it to a live circuit can damage the meter and cause injury.
What is a clamp-on ammeter and its advantage?
A meter that measures current by clamping its jaws around a single conductor, sensing the magnetic field, so the circuit does not have to be opened/broken to take the reading.
What is the CAT (category) rating on a meter and why does it matter?
It indicates the meter's safe transient-overvoltage rating for the location of use (CAT I-IV). Higher CAT numbers handle higher available fault energy; using an underrated meter is dangerous.
What does NEC stand for and what is its document number?
National Electrical Code, NFPA 70. It is the US standard for safe electrical installation.
