What is the purpose of a lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedure in industrial maintenance?
To isolate and de-energize equipment so it cannot be started while maintenance is performed, protecting workers from hazardous energy. Only the worker who applies a lock may remove it.
What is the difference between a 'lock' and a 'tag' in lockout/tagout?
A lock is a physical device that prevents the energy-isolating device from being operated. A tag is a warning label only; it provides no physical restraint and is used when a lock cannot be applied.
In confined space entry, what three conditions define a 'permit-required confined space'?
It is large enough to enter, has limited means of entry/exit, and is not designed for continuous occupancy — PLUS a hazard such as toxic/oxygen-deficient atmosphere, engulfment risk, or other serious hazard.

What is the function of a fastener's torque specification?
It defines the rotational force applied to achieve correct clamping load (preload). Too little allows loosening; too much can strip threads or yield the bolt.
What is the difference between a bolt's tensile strength and proof load?
Tensile strength is the maximum stress a bolt withstands before breaking. Proof load is the maximum tension a bolt can carry without permanent (plastic) deformation — typically about 90% of yield.
What do the head markings on an SAE Grade 5 versus Grade 8 bolt indicate?
Radial line markings indicate strength grade: 3 lines = Grade 5 (medium strength), 6 lines = Grade 8 (highest common strength). More lines = higher tensile strength.
What is the difference between a static seal and a dynamic seal?

Apply force only to the inner race when pressing onto a shaft (and only to the outer race when pressing into a housing). Never drive force through the balls/rollers, as it brinells the raceways.
