Pharmaceutical Management flashcards for GPAT
18 of 64 cards from the Pharmaceutical Management deck — real questions with worked answers.
Define management as a discipline.
Management is the process of planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling organizational resources (men, money, materials, machines) to achieve predetermined goals efficiently and effectively.
What are the five basic functions of management (POSDC)?
Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Directing, and Controlling.
Distinguish between efficiency and effectiveness in management.
Efficiency means doing things right (optimal use of resources, minimum waste); effectiveness means doing the right things (achieving the intended goals/results).
What are the three managerial skills identified by Robert Katz?
Technical skills, Human (interpersonal) skills, and Conceptual skills. Technical skills dominate at lower levels; conceptual skills dominate at top levels.
Who proposed the 14 Principles of Management and in which administrative theory?
Henri Fayol, in his Administrative (Classical) Management Theory.
State Fayol's principles of 'Unity of Command' and 'Unity of Direction'.
Unity of Command: an employee should receive orders from only one superior. Unity of Direction: one head and one plan for a group of activities having the same objective.
What does Fayol's 'Scalar Chain' principle mean, and what is the Gang Plank?
Scalar chain is the formal line of authority from top to bottom. The Gang Plank allows direct horizontal communication between same-level employees in emergencies, bypassing the chain to save time.
What is the ABC analysis of inventory control?
A selective inventory technique classifying items by annual consumption value: A items (~10% items, ~70% value, tight control), B items (~20% items, ~20% value, moderate control), C items (~70% items, ~10% value, loose control).
Give the formula for Economic Order Quantity (EOQ).
EOQ = √(2DS/H), where D = annual demand, S = ordering cost per order, H = holding (carrying) cost per unit per year.
What does VED analysis classify inventory by, and what do the letters stand for?
VED classifies items by criticality: Vital (essential, stock-out unacceptable), Essential (important, moderate stock), Desirable (least critical). Widely used for spare parts and life-saving drugs.
Define reorder level (ROL) and give its formula.
ROL is the inventory level at which a fresh order is placed. ROL = Maximum daily usage × Maximum lead time (or Average usage × lead time + safety stock).
What is safety stock (buffer stock)?
The extra inventory held as a cushion against uncertainties in demand and lead time to prevent stock-outs. Safety stock = (Max daily usage × Max lead time) − (Avg daily usage × Avg lead time).
What is the FSN analysis of inventory?
Classification based on movement/consumption rate: Fast-moving, Slow-moving, and Non-moving items. Helps identify obsolete stock.
Define Supply Chain Management (SCM).
SCM is the integrated management of the flow of goods, services, information, and finances from raw-material suppliers through manufacturing and distribution to the final customer, aiming to maximize value and minimize cost.
What are the key components/flows in a supply chain?
Three flows: material/product flow (downstream), information flow (bidirectional), and financial/cash flow (upstream). Members: suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers, customers.
What is the 'bullwhip effect' in supply chain management?
The amplification of demand variability as orders move upstream from retailer to manufacturer, causing increasing inventory swings due to forecast errors and order batching.
Differentiate upstream and downstream supply chain.
Upstream involves suppliers and raw-material sourcing (inbound logistics); downstream involves distribution to wholesalers, retailers, and customers (outbound logistics).
What are the four main types of communication?
Verbal (oral), Written, Non-verbal (body language, gestures), and Visual communication.
