    Laterite soils form under high temperature and heavy rainfall with alternating wet-dry seasons that leach away silica leaving iron and aluminium oxides; found in the Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats and hill areas, they are acidic and low in fertility, used for cashew and after manuring for tea/coffee.

  2. Distinguish the natural vegetation types: tropical evergreen vs tropical deciduous (monsoon) forests.

    Tropical evergreen forests grow in high-rainfall areas (>200 cm), are dense, multi-layered and never shed all leaves together (e.g. Western Ghats, Andamans). Tropical deciduous (monsoon) forests grow in 70-200 cm rainfall zones and shed leaves in the dry season (teak, sal); they are India's most widespread forest type.

  3. What is the difference between the Green Revolution and the White Revolution in India?

    The Green Revolution boosted foodgrain (mainly wheat and rice) output through high-yielding varieties, irrigation and fertilizers from the late 1960s; the White Revolution (Operation Flood) made India the world's largest milk producer through dairy cooperatives led by Verghese Kurien.

  4. Differentiate subsistence and commercial agriculture.

    Subsistence agriculture is grown mainly for the farmer's own consumption with low surplus and traditional inputs; commercial agriculture is grown for sale in the market, typically on a large scale with high inputs, mechanization and cash/plantation crops.

  5. What climatic and soil conditions are ideal for rice cultivation?

    Rice requires high temperature (above ~25°C), high humidity, and abundant water/rainfall above ~100 cm (or assured irrigation), with level land that holds water and deep clayey/alluvial fertile soil.

  6. Classify natural resources by renewability with examples.

    Renewable resources can be replenished within a human timescale (solar, wind, water, forests); non-renewable resources exist in fixed stocks and deplete with use (coal, petroleum, natural gas, most minerals).

  7. What is the difference between metallic, non-metallic and energy minerals?

    Metallic minerals yield metals (iron ore, bauxite, copper, manganese); non-metallic minerals do not (limestone, mica, gypsum); energy/mineral fuels provide power (coal, petroleum, natural gas, uranium).

  8. State the demographic transition model's stages.

    Rural settlements are small, primarily engaged in agriculture/primary activities; urban settlements are larger and dominated by secondary/tertiary activities. Rural patterns include compact/nucleated, dispersed/scattered, linear and circular settlements.

  12. What factors influence the location of industries (industrial location)?

    Availability of raw materials, power/energy, labour, capital, transport, market access, water, and government policy; Weber's least-cost theory holds that industries locate to minimize total transport and production costs.

  13. Compare the four major modes of land/water transport on cost and suitability.

    Roadways: flexible, door-to-door, best for short distances. Railways: efficient for bulky goods and passengers over medium-long land distances. Waterways: cheapest for heavy, bulky goods over long distances but slow. Airways: fastest and costliest, for perishable/high-value goods and long distance.

  14. What is the difference between the balance of trade and the balance of payments?

    Balance of trade is the difference between the value of a country's merchandise (visible) exports and imports; balance of payments is the broader record of all economic transactions (visible, invisible, capital) between a country and the rest of the world.

  15. Define the terms 'developed' and 'developing' country using common indicators.

    Developed countries have high per-capita income, high HDI, advanced industry/services, low birth/death rates and good infrastructure; developing countries have lower per-capita income and HDI, larger primary sectors and ongoing improvements in health and literacy.

  16. What is the Human Development Index (HDI) and its three dimensions?

    A composite UN index of development combining a long and healthy life (life expectancy), knowledge (mean and expected years of schooling) and a decent standard of living (GNI per capita, PPP).

  17. Name the seven continents in order of size.

    Asia (largest), Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australia (smallest).

  18. What are the major natural regions/biomes of the world?

    Equatorial (tropical rainforest), Tropical monsoon, Savanna (tropical grassland), Hot desert, Mediterranean, Temperate grassland (steppe/prairie), Temperate (deciduous) forest, Taiga (coniferous), and Tundra/Polar.

  19. What is map scale, and how do small-scale and large-scale maps differ?

    Scale is the ratio of map distance to actual ground distance. A large-scale map (e.g. 1:10,000) shows a small area in great detail; a small-scale map (e.g. 1:1,000,000) shows a large area with little detail.

  20. What do contour lines on a topographic map represent, and how is spacing read?

    Contour lines join points of equal elevation; closely spaced contours indicate steep slopes, widely spaced contours indicate gentle slopes, and concentric closed contours indicate a hill or depression.

  21. What is the difference between latitude and longitude, and what defines the prime meridian and equator?

    Latitude measures distance north or south of the equator (0° to 90°); longitude measures distance east or west of the prime meridian (0° to 180°). The equator (0° latitude) divides Earth into hemispheres; the prime meridian (0° longitude) passes through Greenwich and anchors world time zones.

  22. What is the difference between a hazard and a disaster in disaster management?

    A hazard is a potentially damaging natural or human-induced event or condition; a disaster is the actual serious disruption that occurs when a hazard strikes a vulnerable, exposed community causing losses exceeding its capacity to cope.

  23. State the disaster risk equation and the phases of the disaster management cycle.

    Risk = (Hazard × Vulnerability × Exposure) / Capacity. The management cycle has phases of mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery/rehabilitation (often grouped as pre-disaster, during, and post-disaster).

  24. What is India's institutional framework for disaster management under the DM Act, 2005?
