24 sample cards from the Unit - VII deck
Sampled from the end of the deck, so these are different cards from the ones shown on the syllabus page.
What is the standard notation for writing a Unicode code point?
'U+' followed by the hexadecimal value, e.g., U+0041.
Which body develops and maintains the Unicode standard?
The Unicode Consortium.
Which Unicode encoding is fully backward-compatible with ASCII and dominant on the web?
UTF-8.
What is the Unicode code point for the uppercase letter 'A'?
U+0041 (decimal 65).
What is the difference between primary and secondary storage?
Primary storage (e.g., RAM) is fast, directly accessible main memory and usually volatile; secondary storage (e.g., HDD/SSD) is slower, permanent, non-volatile bulk storage.
Give an example of volatile memory and state what 'volatile' means.
RAM; volatile means its contents are lost when power is switched off.
Give two examples of non-volatile storage.
ROM and Hard Disk Drive (also SSD, flash drives, optical discs).
How many bits make up one byte?
8 bits.
State the relationship between KB, MB, GB and TB (binary).
1 KB = 1024 bytes, 1 MB = 1024 KB, 1 GB = 1024 MB, 1 TB = 1024 GB.
What is the main physical difference between an HDD and an SSD?
An HDD stores data magnetically on spinning platters with moving parts; an SSD uses flash memory with no moving parts, making it faster and more durable.
What is cache memory and where is it located?
A small, very fast memory placed between the CPU and main RAM that stores frequently used data/instructions to speed up processing.
List the memory hierarchy from fastest to slowest.
Registers > Cache > Main memory (RAM) > Secondary storage (HDD/SSD/optical).
Give three examples of optical storage media.
CD, DVD and Blu-ray disc.
State the typical storage capacities of a CD, a DVD and a single-layer Blu-ray disc.
CD about 700 MB, DVD about 4.7 GB, single-layer Blu-ray about 25 GB.
What is the fastest type of storage in a computer, located inside the CPU?
Registers.
What is the difference between RAM and ROM?
RAM is volatile read/write working memory; ROM is non-volatile memory that is permanently written and mainly read (stores firmware/boot instructions).
Define an input device.
A hardware device that feeds data and instructions from the user into the computer.
Define an output device.
A hardware device that presents processed data (results) from the computer to the user.
Give four common examples of input devices.
Keyboard, mouse, scanner and microphone.
Give three common examples of output devices.
Monitor, printer and speaker.
Name two devices that act as both input and output devices.
Touchscreen and modem (also network interface card).
What do the acronyms OMR and OCR stand for?
OMR = Optical Mark Recognition; OCR = Optical Character Recognition.
What does MICR stand for and where is it mainly used?
Magnetic Ink Character Recognition; used to process cheques in the banking industry.
What is the difference between impact and non-impact printers, with an example of each?
Impact printers strike the paper through a ribbon (e.g., dot-matrix); non-impact printers print without striking (e.g., inkjet, laser).
What this deck covers
The Unit - VII deck follows the UGC NET Law Unit - VII syllabus — 2 chapters and 5 topics — so questions land on material that is genuinely examinable rather than trivia around it. That works out to roughly 25.0 cards per chapter.
Answers are written to be recallable, not just readable — averaging about 70 characters, which is long enough to carry the reasoning and short enough to say out loud.
A deck like this earns its keep on the second and third pass. Read the syllabus first so you know the shape of the subject, then use the cards to find the specific facts that have not stuck.
