What is the 'main idea' of a passage?
The central point or most important message the author wants to convey — what the passage is mostly about, often stated in a topic sentence.
What is the difference between skimming and scanning in reading?
Skimming is reading quickly to get the general idea; scanning is searching the text rapidly to find specific information or keywords.
What is passage analysis?
Examining a text closely to identify its main idea, supporting details, tone, structure, purpose, and the author's argument or point of view.
What is meant by the 'tone' of a passage?
The author's attitude or emotional stance toward the subject, such as critical, humorous, formal, optimistic, or sarcastic.
What is the 'purpose' of a passage in passage analysis?

What is an inference in reading?

How does an inference differ from a directly stated fact?
A stated fact is written explicitly in the text; an inference is implied and must be deduced by combining textual clues with reasoning.
When making an inference, what should it always be based on?
Evidence within the passage and logical reasoning — never on outside assumptions or personal opinion not supported by the text.
