What is a prehung door?
A prehung door is a door already mounted on its hinges within a complete frame (jambs) with the stop installed, shipped as a unit so it can be set into the rough opening and fastened plumb and level.
What is flashing around a window/door and why is it important?
Flashing is the membrane or metal that directs water away from the opening, integrated with the building's weather-resistive barrier so water sheds outward and cannot enter the wall, preventing leaks and rot.
What is the purpose of shimming a window or door during installation?
Shims fill the gap between the unit frame and the rough framing so the unit can be set plumb, level, and square without bowing the jambs, ensuring it operates correctly and seals properly.
What is the difference between a casing and a baseboard in interior finish carpentry?
Casing is the trim that surrounds door and window openings, covering the gap between the jamb and the wall. Baseboard is the trim that runs along the bottom of the wall where it meets the floor.
What is the difference between a miter joint and a coped joint in trim work?
A miter joint joins two pieces cut at equal angles (e.g., 45 degrees) at a corner. A coped joint has one piece cut square to the wall and the second piece's profile cut to fit over it, producing tighter inside corners that resist gapping.
At what angle is each piece of trim cut to form a 90-degree outside corner with a miter joint?
Each piece is cut at 45 degrees; the two 45-degree cuts add up to the 90-degree corner.
What is a 'reveal' when installing door casing?
A reveal is the small, consistent setback (typically about 3/16") of the casing from the inside edge of the jamb, providing a uniform reference line and a neat appearance at corners.
Define the key stair terms: tread, riser, and stringer.
The tread is the horizontal surface you step on. The riser is the vertical board between treads (the height of each step). The stringer is the inclined structural member that supports the treads and risers.
What is total rise and total run in stair layout?
Total rise is the vertical distance from one finished floor level to the next. Total run is the total horizontal distance the stairway covers from the first to the last riser.
How do you find the number of risers and the unit rise for a stairway?
Divide the total rise by an ideal riser height (~7") and round to a whole number to get the number of risers; then divide total rise by that number of risers to get the exact unit rise.
What is a common rule of thumb relating riser height and tread depth for comfortable stairs?
Common rules: riser + tread = 17 to 18 inches; or 2 x riser + tread = 24 to 25 inches. A typical comfortable step is about a 7" riser with an 11" tread.
How many treads are there relative to the number of risers in a typical staircase?
There is always one fewer tread than risers, because the top riser ends at the upper floor level (which serves as the final 'tread').
What is the difference between a footing form and a wall form in concrete formwork?
A footing form holds the concrete for the spread footing (the wide base below grade). A wall form (two opposing form faces tied together) shapes the foundation wall that rests on the footing.
What is the difference between an edge form and a slab-on-grade?
A slab-on-grade is a concrete floor poured directly on prepared ground. Edge forms (perimeter form boards) contain and shape the outside edges of that slab to the correct thickness and line.
What is a key (keyway) in a concrete footing and what is its purpose?
A keyway is a groove formed in the top of the footing; when the wall is poured, concrete fills it to create a key that locks the wall to the footing and helps resist lateral movement and water infiltration.
What are form ties and what two jobs do they perform in a wall form?
Form ties are metal connectors spanning between the two form faces. They hold the forms at the correct spacing (wall thickness) against the outward pressure of fresh concrete and keep the forms from spreading.
What is the purpose of form bracing and walers (wales) on wall forms?
Walers are horizontal members that stiffen and align the form panels and distribute tie loads; braces (kickers/strongbacks) hold the forms plumb and resist the lateral pressure of the concrete and wind during the pour.
What is a form release agent (form oil) and why is it applied before pouring?
It is a coating applied to the inside of forms so concrete will not bond to them, making stripping easier, protecting the form surface for reuse, and giving a cleaner concrete finish.
What does 'stripping' formwork mean, and what governs when it can be done?
Stripping is removing the forms after the concrete has cured. Forms can be stripped once the concrete has gained enough strength to support itself and any loads, per the specifications or engineer—vertical wall forms sooner, structural slab/beam forms later.
What is rebar and how are common bar sizes designated?
Rebar (reinforcing bar) is steel bar embedded in concrete to carry tensile loads. In US sizing, the bar number is the diameter in eighths of an inch—e.g., a #4 bar is 4/8" = 1/2" diameter, a #5 is 5/8".
Why does concrete need steel reinforcement?
Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension. Embedded steel rebar carries the tensile and bending forces, preventing cracking and failure where the concrete would otherwise pull apart.
What is concrete cover and why is minimum cover required for rebar?
Cover is the thickness of concrete between the rebar and the surface. Adequate cover protects the steel from corrosion, fire, and moisture and develops bond. Minimums are larger for surfaces cast against earth (e.g., 3") than for formed surfaces.
What is the purpose of rebar 'chairs' and bolsters in reinforcement placement?
Chairs and bolsters are supports that hold the reinforcing bars at the correct height/position within the form so the steel ends up at the proper depth with correct cover when the concrete is poured.
What is a lap splice in rebar and why is it used?
A lap splice overlaps two bars by a specified length and ties them so loads transfer between bars through the concrete bond, providing continuity where a single bar is not long enough. The lap length depends on bar size and code.
