Product of extremes = product of means, i.e. a × d = b × c.
In the proportion a : b :: c : d, name the extremes, means, and the fourth proportional.
a and d are the extremes, b and c are the means, and d is the fourth proportional to a, b, c.
What is the mean proportional (geometric mean) between a and b?
The mean proportional is √(a × b).
If a sum is divided in the ratio a : b : c, what fraction does the first share represent?
The first share = a / (a + b + c) of the total sum.
What is the formula for the average (arithmetic mean) of a set of numbers?
Average = (Sum of all observations) / (Number of observations).
What is the average of the first n natural numbers?
Average = (n + 1) / 2.
What is the average of the first n consecutive odd numbers, and of the first n even numbers?
Average of first n odd numbers = n. Average of first n even numbers = (n + 1).
How does the average change if every number in a set is increased by k?
The new average also increases by k (the same constant).
What is the formula for finding present age problems where a person is x times as old as another?
Set up an equation: if A is x times B's age, A = x·B; combine with the given age difference or future/past condition to solve.
In alligation/mixtures, what does the rule of alligation give you?
It gives the ratio in which two ingredients at different prices/concentrations must be mixed: (Quantity cheaper)/(Quantity dearer) = (Price dearer − Mean) / (Mean − Price cheaper).
If a vessel has milk and from it some is replaced by water n times, what fraction of milk remains?
Remaining milk = Initial quantity × (1 − replaced/total)^n.
Define Cost Price (CP) and Selling Price (SP).
Cost Price is the price at which an article is bought; Selling Price is the price at which it is sold.
What are the formulas for Profit% and Loss%?
Profit% = (Profit / CP) × 100; Loss% = (Loss / CP) × 100. Both are always calculated on the Cost Price.
What is the formula for SP in terms of CP and gain/loss percent?
SP = CP × (100 + Gain%)/100, or SP = CP × (100 − Loss%)/100.
What is discount, and on what value is it calculated?
Discount is a reduction given on the Marked Price (MP). Discount = MP − SP, and Discount% = (Discount / MP) × 100.
If two successive discounts of a% and b% are given, what is the single equivalent discount?
Single equivalent discount = (a + b − ab/100) %.
What is the formula for Simple Interest?
SI = (P × R × T) / 100, where P = principal, R = rate per annum, T = time in years.
In simple interest, what is the formula for the total amount A?
A = P + SI = P(1 + RT/100).
At simple interest, in how many years will a sum double at rate R% per annum?
Time to double = 100 / R years (since SI must equal P).
What is the formula for the Amount under Compound Interest (compounded annually)?
A = P(1 + R/100)^T, and CI = A − P.
How is the compound interest amount formula adjusted when interest is compounded half-yearly?
Rate is halved and time is doubled: A = P(1 + (R/2)/100)^(2T).
For the same P, R, and 2 years, what is the difference between CI and SI?
Difference = P × (R/100)², equivalently CI − SI = P·R²/100² for 2 years.
If A can do a work in n days, how much work does A do in one day?
A's one-day work = 1/n of the total work.
If A does a job in x days and B in y days, how long do they take working together?
Together they take (xy)/(x + y) days, since combined one-day work = 1/x + 1/y.
