Scrum Framework flashcards for Project Management

18 of 51 cards from the Scrum Framework deck — real questions with worked answers.

  1. What are the three pillars of Scrum's empirical process control?

    Transparency, Inspection, and Adaptation.

  2. Define the pillar of Transparency in Scrum.

The emergent process and work must be visible to those performing it and those receiving it, based on a common standard so observers share a common understanding of what is being seen.

  3. Define the pillar of Inspection in Scrum.

Scrum artifacts and progress toward agreed goals must be inspected frequently and diligently to detect potentially undesirable variances or problems; inspection enables adaptation.

  4. Define the pillar of Adaptation in Scrum.

If any aspect of a process deviates outside acceptable limits or the resulting product is unacceptable, the process or the material being produced must be adjusted, and the adjustment should be made as soon as possible to minimize further deviation.

  5. How do the three pillars relate to one another in sequence?

Transparency enables meaningful Inspection; Inspection without transparency is misleading; Inspection then enables Adaptation. Together they underpin empiricism.

  6. What are the five Scrum Values?

Commitment, Focus, Openness, Respect, and Courage.

  7. In the Scrum Values, what does Commitment refer to?

The Scrum Team commits to achieving its goals and to supporting each other.

  8. In the Scrum Values, what does Focus mean?

The team's primary focus is on the work of the Sprint to make the best possible progress toward the Sprint Goal.

  9. In the Scrum Values, what do Openness and Respect mean?

Openness: the team and stakeholders are open about the work and the challenges. Respect: members respect each other as capable, independent people and are respected as such by those they work with.

  10. In the Scrum Values, what does Courage mean?

Scrum Team members have the courage to do the right thing and to work on tough problems.

  11. What is the Definition of Done in Scrum?

A formal, shared description of the state of the Increment when it meets the quality measures required for the product; when a Product Backlog item meets the Definition of Done, an Increment is born.

  12. If a Product Backlog item does not meet the Definition of Done, what happens to it?

It cannot be released or even presented at the Sprint Review; instead it returns to the Product Backlog for future consideration.

  13. Who is responsible for creating and maintaining the Definition of Done when the organization does not provide one?

The Scrum Team (specifically the Developers must conform to it), and the team creates one appropriate for the product if organizational standards do not exist.

  14. What are the three accountabilities (roles) that make up a Scrum Team?

One Product Owner, one Scrum Master, and the Developers.

  15. What is the recommended size of a Scrum Team?

Typically 10 or fewer people; small enough to remain nimble and large enough to complete significant work within a Sprint.

  16. Are there sub-teams or hierarchies within a Scrum Team?

No. The Scrum Team is a cohesive unit of professionals with no sub-teams or hierarchies, focused on one objective at a time (the Product Goal).

  17. What is the Product Owner accountable for?

Maximizing the value of the product resulting from the work of the Scrum Team, and effective Product Backlog management.

  18. List the key Product Backlog management responsibilities of the Product Owner.

Developing and explicitly communicating the Product Goal; creating and clearly communicating Product Backlog items; ordering Product Backlog items; and ensuring the Product Backlog is transparent, visible, and understood.
