What are carbohydrates, and what is their general empirical formula?
Carbohydrates are polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones (or compounds that yield them on hydrolysis). Their general formula is (CH2O)n, i.e. Cn(H2O)n.
Classify carbohydrates into their three main groups with one example of each.
Monosaccharides (e.g. glucose), oligosaccharides/disaccharides (e.g. sucrose), and polysaccharides (e.g. starch).
Name the monosaccharide units that make up sucrose, lactose, and maltose.
Sucrose = glucose + fructose; Lactose = glucose + galactose; Maltose = glucose + glucose.
Compare the storage polysaccharides of plants and animals.
Plants store glucose as starch (amylose + amylopectin); animals store glucose as glycogen, which is more highly branched than starch.
What type of bond joins monosaccharides in di- and polysaccharides, and how is it formed?
A glycosidic bond, formed by a condensation (dehydration) reaction with the removal of a water molecule.
What is the structural role of cellulose and why can't humans digest it?

Lipids are a heterogeneous group of organic compounds that are insoluble in water but soluble in non-polar (organic) solvents such as ether and chloroform.
What are the building blocks of a triglyceride (fat/oil)?
One molecule of glycerol and three fatty acid chains, joined by ester bonds formed through condensation.
Differentiate between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids.
Saturated fatty acids have no C=C double bonds (single bonds only) and are usually solid at room temperature; unsaturated fatty acids contain one or more C=C double bonds and are usually liquid (oils).
Describe the structure of a phospholipid and its role in membranes.
A phospholipid has a hydrophilic phosphate-containing head and two hydrophobic fatty acid tails (glycerol backbone). This amphipathic nature lets it form the bilayer of cell membranes.
Give two important biological functions of lipids besides energy storage.
