What is the literal meaning of the word 'Quran', and how was it revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)?
Quran means 'the recitation' or 'that which is read'. It was revealed gradually over approximately 23 years through the angel Jibreel (Gabriel).
Where and when did the first revelation of the Quran come to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)?
In the Cave of Hira (near Makkah), in the month of Ramadan, when he was 40 years old. The first verses revealed were from Surah Al-Alaq, beginning 'Iqra' (Read).
During whose caliphate was the Quran first compiled into a single book (mushaf), and who led the effort?
During the caliphate of Abu Bakr (RA), the compilation was led by Zaid ibn Thabit, prompted by the death of many huffaz (memorizers) in the Battle of Yamama.
Which caliph standardized the Quran into one official version and distributed copies, and why?
Caliph Usman (RA) standardized the Quran to prevent disputes over differing recitations/dialects; non-standard copies were burned. He is titled 'Jami-ul-Quran'.
How many Surahs and approximately how many verses (ayat) are in the Quran?
The Quran contains 114 Surahs and approximately 6,236 verses (counts vary slightly by tradition).
What is the difference between Makki and Madani Surahs?
Makki Surahs were revealed before the migration (Hijrah) in Makkah, generally short, focusing on Tawheed, faith and the Hereafter. Madani Surahs were revealed after Hijrah in Madina, generally longer, dealing with law, social rules and governance.
What is the longest Surah and the shortest Surah of the Quran?
The longest is Surah Al-Baqarah (286 verses); the shortest is Surah Al-Kawthar (3 verses).
Which Surah is called the 'Heart of the Quran', and which Surah is the opening chapter?
Surah Ya-Sin is called the 'Heart of the Quran'. Surah Al-Fatiha is the opening chapter (also called 'Umm-ul-Kitab').
What is the central message/theme of Surah Al-Ikhlas?
It declares the absolute Oneness (Tawheed) of Allah: He is One, Eternal (As-Samad), neither begets nor is begotten, and there is nothing comparable to Him.
What is the theme of Surah Al-Fatiha and why is it recited in every Salah?
It is a prayer praising Allah (Lord of all worlds, Most Merciful, Master of the Day of Judgement) and seeking guidance to the straight path. It is obligatory in every unit (rakah) of Salah.
What does 'Ayat-ul-Kursi' (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255) describe?
It describes the greatness, knowledge, and sovereignty of Allah: the Ever-Living, Self-Sustaining, whose Throne extends over the heavens and earth, and who is never wearied by sustaining them.
What are the main themes/teachings emphasized in the Quran?
Tawheed (Oneness of God), prophethood (Risalah), the Hereafter (Akhirah), worship, justice, morality, social conduct, and guidance for individual and collective life.
Define Tawheed and its three main categories.
Tawheed is belief in the absolute Oneness of Allah. Its categories are: Tawheed-ar-Rububiyyah (Oneness of Lordship), Tawheed-al-Uluhiyyah (Oneness of worship), and Tawheed-al-Asma-wa-Sifat (Oneness of names and attributes).
What is the opposite of Tawheed in Islam, and why is it considered the gravest sin?
Shirk (associating partners with Allah). It is the gravest sin because it negates the foundational principle of Islam — the absolute Oneness of God — and is the one sin not forgiven if one dies upon it.
Define Imaan (faith) in Islamic terms.
Imaan is to affirm with the heart, declare with the tongue, and act with the limbs — belief in the fundamentals of faith, primarily the Oneness of Allah and the prophethood of Muhammad (PBUH).
What are the Six Articles of Faith (Imaan-e-Mufassal) in Islam?
Belief in: (1) Allah, (2) His Angels, (3) His Books, (4) His Messengers, (5) the Day of Judgement, and (6) Divine Decree/Predestination (Taqdeer), good and bad.
What is the difference between Imaan-e-Mujmal and Imaan-e-Mufassal?
Imaan-e-Mujmal is the brief declaration of faith (belief in Allah as He is, with His names and attributes). Imaan-e-Mufassal is the detailed declaration listing the six articles of faith.
What are the names of the major revealed Books and the prophets they were given to?
Tawrat (Torah) to Musa (Moses), Zabur (Psalms) to Dawud (David), Injil (Gospel) to Isa (Jesus), and the Quran to Muhammad (PBUH).
Name the angels and their primary duties as mentioned in Islamic belief.
Jibreel (revelation), Mikael (sustenance/rain), Israfeel (blowing the trumpet on Judgement Day), and Izrael/Malak-ul-Maut (taking souls at death).
What are the Five Pillars of Islam?
(1) Shahadah (declaration of faith), (2) Salah (prayer), (3) Zakat (almsgiving), (4) Sawm (fasting in Ramadan), and (5) Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah).
How many obligatory (fard) daily prayers are there, and name them with their rakah counts of fard?
