  1. State Newton's first law of motion (the law of inertia).

    A body remains at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force.

  2. What is the formula for force according to Newton's second law, and its SI unit?

    Force = mass × acceleration (F = ma). SI unit is the newton (N), where 1 N = 1 kg·m/s².

  3. Define work in physics and give its SI unit.

    Work = force × distance moved in the direction of the force (W = F × d). SI unit is the joule (J).

  4. What is the difference between kinetic energy and potential energy?

    Kinetic energy is energy due to motion (KE = ½mv²); potential energy is stored energy due to position or state (e.g. gravitational PE = mgh).

  5. State the law of conservation of energy.

    Energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it only changes from one form to another, and the total energy of an isolated system remains constant.

  6. What is power and its SI unit?

    Power is the rate of doing work (Power = work / time). SI unit is the watt (W), where 1 W = 1 joule per second.

  7. How does heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation differ?

    Conduction transfers heat through direct contact in solids; convection transfers heat by movement of fluid (liquids/gases); radiation transfers heat as electromagnetic waves needing no medium.

  8. What are the three primary colours of light, and what colours combine to make white light?

    The three primary colours of light are red, green and blue; combined in equal amounts they produce white light.

  9. Why is the speed of sound greater in solids than in gases?

    Particles in solids are more closely packed, so vibrations (sound waves) are transmitted faster; sound is fastest in solids, slower in liquids, and slowest in gases.

  10. What is the approximate speed of sound and speed of light in air?

    Speed of sound in air is about 343 m/s (≈340 m/s); speed of light is about 3 × 10⁸ m/s (300,000 km/s).

  11. What is the difference between reflection and refraction of light?

    Reflection is the bouncing back of light from a surface; refraction is the bending of light as it passes from one medium to another due to a change in speed.

  12. Ohm's law: state it and give the formula.

    The current through a conductor is directly proportional to the voltage across it (at constant temperature). V = I × R, where V is voltage, I is current, R is resistance.

  13. What is the SI unit of electric current, and what does it measure?

    The ampere (A); it measures the rate of flow of electric charge (1 ampere = 1 coulomb per second).

  14. What is the difference between a conductor and an insulator?

    A conductor allows electric current to flow easily (e.g. copper, silver); an insulator resists the flow of current (e.g. rubber, glass, plastic).

  15. What are the magnetic poles of the Earth, and how does a compass needle align?

    Earth behaves like a giant magnet; a freely suspended compass needle aligns north-south, its north pole pointing toward Earth's geographic (magnetic) north.

  16. What is electromagnetic induction?

    The production of an electromotive force (voltage) in a conductor when it is exposed to a changing magnetic field; the basis of electric generators (discovered by Faraday).

  17. List the seven base SI units and the quantities they measure.

    Metre (length), kilogram (mass), second (time), ampere (electric current), kelvin (temperature), mole (amount of substance), candela (luminous intensity).

  18. Convert: how many degrees Celsius is 0 K, and what is the boiling point of water in kelvin?

    0 K = −273.15 °C (absolute zero); water boils at 373.15 K (100 °C).

  19. What SI prefixes correspond to 10⁻³, 10⁻⁶ and 10⁻⁹?

    milli (10⁻³), micro (10⁻⁶) and nano (10⁻⁹).

  20. Name the three subatomic particles of an atom with their charges and locations.

  21. What is the difference between atomic number and mass number?

    Atomic number is the number of protons in an atom; mass number is the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus.

    Horizontal rows are called periods; vertical columns are called groups.
