   A common noun names a general person, place, or thing (city, boy), while a proper noun names a specific one and is capitalised (Lahore, Ali).

3. What is a gerund and how does it function in a sentence?

   A gerund is the -ing form of a verb used as a noun, e.g. 'Swimming is good exercise' (subject) or 'I enjoy reading' (object).

4. List the three degrees of comparison of adjectives with an example.

   Positive (tall), Comparative (taller), and Superlative (tallest).

5. What is the structure (formula) of the Present Perfect tense?

   Subject + has/have + past participle (V3), e.g. 'She has finished her work.'

6. What is the structure of the Past Perfect Continuous tense?

   Subject + had been + present participle (V-ing) + (since/for + time), e.g. 'They had been waiting for two hours.'

7. Which tense is formed by 'Subject + will/shall + be + V-ing' and what does it express?

   The Future Continuous tense; it expresses an action that will be in progress at a specific time in the future, e.g. 'I will be studying at 8 pm.'

8. Name the four aspects of the Present tense with their formulas.

   Simple (V1/s), Continuous (am/is/are + V-ing), Perfect (has/have + V3), Perfect Continuous (has/have + been + V-ing).

9. What is the basic word order of a simple English declarative sentence?

   Subject + Verb + Object (SVO), e.g. 'The boy reads a book.'

10. What is a complex sentence?

    A sentence containing one independent (main) clause and at least one dependent (subordinate) clause, e.g. 'I stayed home because it was raining.'

11. What is a compound sentence and how are its clauses joined?

    A sentence with two or more independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) or a semicolon, e.g. 'I called him, but he didn't answer.'

12. What does the mnemonic FANBOYS stand for?

    The seven coordinating conjunctions: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.

13. What is subject-verb agreement, with an example of the rule for singular subjects?

    The verb must agree in number with its subject; a singular subject takes a singular verb, e.g. 'He runs' not 'He run.'

14. Correct the sentence: 'Each of the students have a book.'

    'Each of the students has a book.' ('Each' is singular and takes a singular verb.)

15. What is the difference between the definite and indefinite article?

    The definite article 'the' refers to a specific noun; the indefinite articles 'a/an' refer to a non-specific singular noun.

16. When is 'a' used versus 'an'?

    'A' is used before a consonant sound (a book, a university), and 'an' before a vowel sound (an apple, an hour).

17. What are determiners? Give three categories.

    Words that introduce and modify nouns. Categories include articles (a, the), demonstratives (this, those), and quantifiers (some, many, few).

18. How do you change an active sentence to passive voice (general rule)?

    The object becomes the subject, the verb changes to 'be + past participle (V3)', and the original subject becomes the agent introduced by 'by'.

19. Convert to passive: 'They are building a house.'

    'A house is being built (by them).'

20. Convert to passive: 'She has written a letter.'

    'A letter has been written (by her).'

21. In passive voice, how is the Simple Past tense formed?

    Object + was/were + past participle (V3), e.g. 'The thief was caught.'

22. In reported (indirect) speech, how does 'present simple' typically change?

    It backshifts to past simple, e.g. He said, 'I work hard' becomes 'He said that he worked hard.'
