  1. In typography, what is the baseline?

    The invisible horizontal line on which letterforms sit. Rounded letters (like o) slightly overshoot it, and descenders (like the tail of p) hang below it. It is the primary reference line for aligning type.

  2. Define x-height and explain why it matters for legibility.

    X-height is the height of a lowercase letter (typically x) excluding ascenders and descenders, measured from the baseline. Typefaces with larger x-heights appear bigger at the same point size and are generally more legible at small sizes.

  3. What is the difference between a counter and a bowl in a letterform?

    A counter is the enclosed or partially enclosed white (negative) space inside a letter, as in o, e, or c. A bowl is the curved stroke that encloses the counter, as in b, d, or o.

  4. Distinguish ascenders from descenders, and name the reference heights associated with uppercase letters.

    Ascenders are lowercase strokes rising above the x-height (b, d, h, k, l); descenders are strokes dropping below the baseline (g, j, p, q, y). Uppercase letters are measured by cap height, the distance from baseline to the top of capitals.

  5. What is a serif?

    A serif is the small finishing stroke or projection at the end of a letter's main strokes. Serifs originated in Roman inscriptional lettering and help lead the eye along lines of text in print.

    The stem is the main, usually vertical, full-length stroke of a letterform — for example, the upright strokes of l, T, or B. It is typically the letter's thickest structural stroke.

  7. What is the difference between bracketed and unbracketed serifs?

    Bracketed serifs join the stem with a smooth, curved transition (as in Old Style faces like Garamond). Unbracketed serifs meet the stem abruptly at a sharp angle, as the hairline serifs of Modern/Didone faces like Bodoni.

  8. What is a terminal in typography?
