What is the color wheel and who first arranged colors into a circular diagram?
The color wheel is a circular arrangement of hues showing relationships between colors (typically 12 hues: 3 primary, 3 secondary, 6 tertiary). Isaac Newton created the first circular color diagram in 1666 by bending the visible spectrum into a circle.
What are the three primary colors in the traditional (RYB) artist's color model, and why are they called 'primary'?
Red, yellow, and blue. They are called primary because they cannot be created by mixing other colors, and all other hues on the wheel can (in theory) be mixed from them.
Name the three secondary colors in the traditional RYB model and state how each is made.
Orange (red + yellow), green (yellow + blue), and violet/purple (blue + red). Each secondary is made by mixing two primary colors in equal amounts.
What is a tertiary color? List the six tertiary colors on the traditional 12-hue wheel.
A tertiary color is made by mixing a primary with an adjacent secondary. The six are: red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red-violet.
Define 'hue' in color theory.
Hue is the attribute of a color that identifies it as a pure spectral color family (red, blue, green, etc.) — the color's position on the color wheel, independent of how light or saturated it is.
Define 'saturation' and describe what a fully desaturated color looks like.
Saturation (also called chroma or intensity) is the purity or vividness of a hue — how free it is from gray. A fully desaturated color has no hue at all and appears as a neutral gray.
Define 'value' in color theory and give the terms for high-value and low-value colors.
Value (or lightness/brightness) is how light or dark a color is. High-value colors are light (tints); low-value colors are dark (shades).
What is a tint, and how is it created?
A tint is a hue mixed with white, which raises its value (makes it lighter) and lowers its saturation. Example: red + white = pink.
What is a shade, and how is it created?
A shade is a hue mixed with black, which lowers its value (makes it darker). Example: red + black = maroon.
What is a tone, and how does it differ from a tint or shade?
A tone is a hue mixed with gray (both black and white). Unlike a tint (adds only white) or shade (adds only black), a tone reduces saturation while keeping value moderate, producing softer, more muted colors.
What are complementary colors? Give the three classic complementary pairs on the RYB wheel.
Complementary colors sit directly opposite each other on the color wheel and produce maximum contrast; mixed together they neutralize into gray/brown. Classic RYB pairs: red–green, blue–orange, yellow–violet.
What is an analogous color scheme, and what is its main strength and weakness?
An analogous scheme uses 3–5 colors adjacent to each other on the color wheel (e.g., yellow, yellow-green, green). Strength: naturally harmonious and serene. Weakness: low contrast, so it can lack visual emphasis without a dominant color.
What is a triadic color scheme, and how are the colors spaced on the wheel?

What is a tetradic (double-complementary) color scheme?

What is a monochromatic color scheme?
A scheme built from a single hue, varied only through its tints, shades, and tones. It guarantees harmony and a clean, unified look, but risks monotony without strong value contrast.
What is a split-complementary color scheme, and why is it often recommended for beginners over a straight complementary scheme?
A base color plus the two colors adjacent to its complement (e.g., blue with yellow-orange and red-orange). It keeps strong contrast like a complementary scheme but with less visual tension, making it easier to balance.
What is additive color mixing, and what device technology relies on it?
Additive mixing combines emitted light of different wavelengths; adding more light increases brightness. RGB (red, green, blue) is the additive model used by screens — monitors, TVs, phones, projectors.
In the RGB additive model, what results from combining all three primaries at full intensity, and from combining pairs of primaries?
Red + green + blue at full intensity = white; absence of all three = black. Pairs: red + green = yellow, green + blue = cyan, red + blue = magenta (these are the additive secondaries and the subtractive primaries).
In 8-bit RGB, what is the value range of each channel, and how many total colors can be represented?

What do the letters CMYK stand for, and what does the 'K' actually mean?
Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key. 'K' stands for the key plate — the black printing plate that carries detail — not 'blacK' (and it avoids confusion with B for blue).
