How many pence are there in £1, and how do you convert £3.45 into pence?
There are 100 pence in £1. To convert pounds to pence, multiply by 100: $£3.45 \times 100 = 345\text{p}$.
When writing an amount of money in pounds, how many decimal places should you use, and how would you write 7 pounds and 5 pence?
Always use 2 decimal places for pounds. Seven pounds and five pence is written as $£7.05$ (the zero is needed as a placeholder).
A shop sells pens at £1.29 each. What is the total cost of 6 pens?
Multiply the price by the quantity: $£1.29 \times 6 = £7.74$.
You pay for a £6.40 item with a £10 note. How much change should you receive?
Subtract the cost from the amount paid: $£10.00 - £6.40 = £3.60$.
How do you calculate the price of an item after a 20% discount, if the original price is £45?
Find 20% of £45 and subtract it: $0.20 \times 45 = £9$, so the sale price is $£45 - £9 = £36$. Alternatively multiply by $0.80$: $45 \times 0.80 = £36$.
How many minutes are in 1 hour, and how many seconds are in 1 minute?
There are 60 minutes in 1 hour and 60 seconds in 1 minute (so $60 \times 60 = 3600$ seconds in an hour).
How do you convert the 12-hour time 3:45 pm into 24-hour clock format?
For pm times (except 12 pm), add 12 to the hour: $3 + 12 = 15$, giving $15{:}45$.
How do you convert the 24-hour time 08:20 into 12-hour clock format?
Times from 00:00 to 11:59 are am. So $08{:}20$ becomes $8{:}20\text{ am}$. (00:xx is 12:xx am.)
A film starts at 19:50 and lasts 2 hours 35 minutes. What time does it finish?
Add the duration: 19:50 + 2 h = 21:50, then + 35 min = 22:25. The film finishes at $22{:}25$.
Why can't you simply use a calculator's decimal subtraction to find the time difference between 2:50 and 4:20?
Time is in base 60, not base 10. Count up instead: 2:50 to 3:00 is 10 min, then 3:00 to 4:20 is 1 h 20 min, total $1\text{ h } 30\text{ min}$.
How many days are in each month of the year (the rhyme/rule)?
30 days have September, April, June and November; all the rest have 31, except February which has 28 (29 in a leap year).
What is a leap year and how do you identify one?
A leap year has 366 days (February has 29). It occurs when the year is divisible by 4 (e.g. 2024, 2028); century years must be divisible by 400.
How many weeks are in a year, and how many days in a week?
There are 52 weeks (and 1 extra day) in a year, and 7 days in a week ($52 \times 7 = 364$).
If 14 March is a Tuesday, what day of the week is 28 March?
28 - 14 = 14 days later, which is exactly $14 \div 7 = 2$ whole weeks, so 28 March is also a Tuesday.
How many days are there from 28 February to 5 March (not a leap year), counting the days in between?
Feb has 28 days. From 28 Feb: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 March = 5 days later. The difference is $5$ days.
List the metric units of length from smallest to largest: mm, cm, m, km, and give their relationships.
$10\text{ mm} = 1\text{ cm}$, $100\text{ cm} = 1\text{ m}$, $1000\text{ m} = 1\text{ km}$. Also $1000\text{ mm} = 1\text{ m}$.
What are the metric relationships between grams, kilograms and tonnes?
$1000\text{ g} = 1\text{ kg}$ and $1000\text{ kg} = 1\text{ tonne}$.

How do you convert 2.5 km into metres?
