What is the standard definition of innovation in a business context?
Innovation is the process of translating an idea or invention into a good or service that creates value, for which customers will pay. Unlike invention (creating something new), innovation requires commercialization and market adoption.
Distinguish between invention and innovation.
Invention is the creation of a new idea, product, or process for the first time. Innovation is converting that invention into commercial use and value. All innovations involve invention or ideas, but not all inventions become innovations.
What are the four broad types of innovation in the 'Innovation Matrix' based on technology and market?
Incremental (existing tech, existing market), Disruptive (new tech, new/low-end market), Architectural (existing tech reconfigured for new market), and Radical/Breakthrough (new tech, new market).
What is the difference between sustaining (incremental) innovation and disruptive innovation, per Clayton Christensen?
Sustaining innovation improves existing products for mainstream customers along established performance metrics. Disruptive innovation starts at the low end or in new markets with simpler/cheaper offerings and eventually displaces incumbents.
Name the four types of innovation in the Schumpeterian/OECD classification by object.
Product innovation, Process innovation, Marketing innovation, and Organizational innovation (the four types defined in the OECD Oslo Manual).
What are the typical stages of the innovation process / innovation funnel?
Idea generation, idea screening, concept development and testing, business analysis, product development, test marketing (prototype), and commercialization/launch.
What is 'open innovation' as coined by Henry Chesbrough?
Open innovation is using both internal and external ideas, paths, and resources to advance technology and create value, in contrast to closed innovation where R&D is done entirely in-house.
What is the 'Stage-Gate' model in innovation management?
A project management framework developed by Robert Cooper that divides the innovation process into stages separated by decision 'gates,' where management decides to go, kill, hold, or recycle a project before resources are committed to the next stage.
What is the difference between 'design thinking' and traditional innovation approaches?
Design thinking is a human-centered, iterative approach with five phases—Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test—that focuses on understanding user needs, unlike linear, technology-first traditional R&D approaches.
What does the 'Diffusion of Innovation' theory (Everett Rogers) classify adopters into?
Five adopter categories: Innovators (2.5%), Early Adopters (13.5%), Early Majority (34%), Late Majority (34%), and Laggards (16%), forming a bell curve of adoption over time.
What are the main types of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)?
Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights, Industrial Designs, Geographical Indications (GI), and Trade Secrets.
What is the term of protection for a patent in India?
20 years from the date of filing the patent application, governed by the Indian Patents Act, 1970.
What does a trademark protect and how long does registration last in India?
A trademark protects brand names, logos, symbols, and slogans that distinguish goods/services. In India, registration is valid for 10 years and is renewable indefinitely for further 10-year periods.
What is the duration of copyright protection in India for literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works?
The lifetime of the author plus 60 years after their death, under the Indian Copyright Act, 1957.
What is a Geographical Indication (GI) and give an Indian example.
A GI is a sign used on products with a specific geographical origin and qualities/reputation due to that origin. Examples: Darjeeling Tea, Basmati Rice, Banarasi Saree, Kanjeevaram Silk.
Who is an entrepreneur and what is entrepreneurship?
An entrepreneur is a person who identifies opportunities, organizes resources, and bears risk to start and run a business. Entrepreneurship is the process of designing, launching, and managing a new venture to create value while bearing risk and uncertainty.
According to Joseph Schumpeter, what is the entrepreneur's central function?
Innovation through 'creative destruction'—introducing new products, methods, markets, sources of supply, or organizational forms, which disrupts existing markets and drives economic development.
Differentiate between an entrepreneur and an intrapreneur.
An entrepreneur starts and owns an independent business, bearing full risk and reward. An intrapreneur innovates and develops new ventures within an existing organization using the company's resources, without personally bearing financial risk.
