What is a natural number?
A counting number starting from 1: 1, 2, 3, 4, ... (positive integers, excluding 0).
What is the difference between whole numbers and natural numbers?
Whole numbers include 0 along with all natural numbers (0, 1, 2, 3, ...); natural numbers start from 1.
Define a prime number and give the smallest prime.
A prime number has exactly two distinct factors: 1 and itself. The smallest prime is 2 (also the only even prime).
What is a composite number?
A natural number greater than 1 that has more than two factors (i.e., it is not prime), e.g., 4, 6, 8, 9.
Classify the number 1: is it prime, composite, or neither?
Neither prime nor composite, because it has only one factor (itself).
What are rational and irrational numbers?
A rational number can be written as p/q where p, q are integers and q ≠ 0 (e.g., 3/4, 0.5). An irrational number cannot (e.g., √2, π); its decimal is non-terminating and non-repeating.
What is the test for divisibility by 3?
A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 3.
What is the test for divisibility by 9?
A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 9.
What is the test for divisibility by 11?
A number is divisible by 11 if the difference between the sum of digits at odd places and the sum of digits at even places is 0 or a multiple of 11.
State the relationship between HCF, LCM, and two numbers.
For two numbers a and b: HCF × LCM = a × b.
How do you convert a fraction to a percentage?
Multiply the fraction by 100 and add the % sign, e.g., 3/4 = (3/4)×100 = 75%.
How do you express a percentage as a fraction?
Divide the percentage by 100 and simplify, e.g., 40% = 40/100 = 2/5.
What is the formula for percentage increase?
Percentage increase = (Increase / Original value) × 100.
What is the formula for percentage decrease?
Percentage decrease = (Decrease / Original value) × 100.
If a value is increased by x% and then decreased by x%, what is the net effect?
There is a net decrease of (x²/100)%, never zero (the final value is lower than the original).
What is x% of y equal to in terms of y% of x?
x% of y = y% of x (they are always equal), since both equal xy/100.
A number is increased by 25%. By what percentage must it be decreased to return to the original?
By 20%, because the decrease needed = (25 / 125) × 100 = 20%.
Define Cost Price (CP) and Selling Price (SP).
Cost Price is the price at which an item is bought; Selling Price is the price at which it is sold.
What are the formulas for profit and loss?
Profit = SP − CP (when SP > CP); Loss = CP − SP (when CP > SP).
How is profit percentage calculated?
Profit% = (Profit / CP) × 100. Profit/loss percentage is always calculated on the Cost Price.
How is loss percentage calculated?
Loss% = (Loss / CP) × 100, calculated on the Cost Price.
What is the formula for SP in terms of CP and profit%?
SP = CP × (100 + Profit%)/100. For a loss: SP = CP × (100 − Loss%)/100.
What are Marked Price (MP) and Discount?
Marked Price (list price) is the price tagged on an item before discount; Discount = MP − SP, and Discount% = (Discount / MP) × 100 (calculated on MP).
A shopkeeper sells two items at the same SP, one at x% profit and the other at x% loss. What is the net result?
There is always a net loss of (x²/100)%.
