State Newton's first law of motion.
A body remains at rest or in uniform straight-line motion unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force. It is also called the law of inertia.
Write the formula for force in terms of mass and acceleration.
Force = mass x acceleration (F = ma). The SI unit of force is the newton (N).
Define kinetic energy and give its formula.
Kinetic energy is the energy possessed by a body due to its motion. K.E. = 1/2 x m x v squared.
What does the law of conservation of energy state?
Energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only be transformed from one form to another. The total energy of an isolated system remains constant.
What is the difference between speed and velocity?
Speed is the distance covered per unit time (a scalar quantity). Velocity is displacement per unit time in a specified direction (a vector quantity).
What are the three methods of heat transfer?
Conduction (through solids by direct contact), convection (through fluids by movement of molecules), and radiation (through electromagnetic waves needing no medium).
Define the boiling point and freezing point of water in degrees Celsius at standard pressure.
Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius and freezes at 0 degrees Celsius at standard atmospheric pressure.
What is the approximate speed of light and speed of sound in air?
Light travels at about 300,000 km/s (3 x 10^8 m/s). Sound travels at about 343 m/s in air at room temperature.
Why do we see lightning before we hear thunder?
Because light travels much faster than sound. Light reaches us almost instantly while sound takes longer to travel the same distance.
What is the difference between reflection and refraction of light?
Reflection is the bouncing back of light from a surface. Refraction is the bending of light as it passes from one medium to another due to a change in speed.
What are the three primary colours of light?
Red, green and blue. Mixing them in equal proportions produces white light.
State Ohm's law and its formula.
The current through a conductor is directly proportional to the voltage and inversely proportional to its resistance. V = I x R (Voltage = Current x Resistance).
What is the difference between a conductor and an insulator?
A conductor allows electric current to flow through it easily (e.g. copper). An insulator does not allow current to flow easily (e.g. rubber, plastic).
What are the like and unlike poles of a magnet rule?
Like poles (north-north or south-south) repel each other, while unlike poles (north-south) attract each other.
Name the SI units of electric current, voltage and resistance.
Current is measured in amperes (A), voltage in volts (V), and resistance in ohms (the omega symbol).
What is the difference between an element, a compound and a mixture?
An element is made of one type of atom. A compound is two or more elements chemically combined in a fixed ratio. A mixture is two or more substances physically combined that can be separated.
Define an atom and a molecule.
An atom is the smallest particle of an element that retains its properties. A molecule is two or more atoms chemically bonded together.
What is the chemical formula of water and common table salt?
Water is H2O. Common table salt (sodium chloride) is NaCl.
Give two examples each of a homogeneous and a heterogeneous mixture.
Homogeneous: salt solution and air. Heterogeneous: sand and water, oil and water.
What is the difference between an acid and a base?
An acid releases hydrogen ions (H+) in water, tastes sour and turns blue litmus red. A base releases hydroxide ions (OH-), tastes bitter, feels soapy and turns red litmus blue.
What does the pH scale measure and what is its range?
The pH scale measures acidity or alkalinity, ranging from 0 to 14. Below 7 is acidic, 7 is neutral, and above 7 is basic (alkaline).
