24 sample cards from the English deck

Sampled from the end of the deck, so these are different cards from the ones shown on the syllabus page.

  1. What is subject-verb agreement?

The rule that a verb must agree with its subject in number and person: a singular subject takes a singular verb (He runs); a plural subject takes a plural verb (They run).

  2. Which tense is used in the first conditional, and what does it express?

First conditional: 'If + simple present, ... will + base verb.' It expresses a real or likely future possibility. Example: If it rains, we will stay home.

  3. What is a punctuation mark, and why is it used?

A symbol that organizes writing and clarifies meaning by indicating pauses, stops, intonation, and relationships between sentence parts.

  4. When is a comma used? Give three uses.

To separate items in a list, to set off introductory elements, and to separate independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction. It also sets off non-essential clauses.

  5. What is the difference between a comma and a semicolon?

A comma marks a brief pause within a sentence; a semicolon links two closely related independent clauses without a conjunction, or separates complex list items containing commas.

  6. When is a colon used?

A colon introduces a list, explanation, quotation, or example after a complete independent clause. Example: She bought three items: pens, books, and ink.

  7. What is the function of an apostrophe?

It shows possession (John's book) and marks omitted letters in contractions (don't, it's = it is).

  8. What is the difference between 'its' and 'it's'?

'Its' is the possessive form (the dog wagged its tail). 'It's' is a contraction of 'it is' or 'it has' (it's raining).

  9. What is the use of a hyphen versus a dash?

A hyphen joins compound words or parts of words (well-known). A dash (en/em) sets off parenthetical or emphatic information within a sentence.

  10. When are quotation marks used?

To enclose direct speech, quotations, and titles of short works, and sometimes to mark words used in a special or ironic sense.

  11. What does a question mark indicate, and a exclamation mark?

A question mark ends a direct question. An exclamation mark ends a statement expressing strong emotion, surprise, or emphasis.

  12. What is skimming as a reading strategy?

Reading quickly to grasp the main idea or general overview of a text without focusing on details. Used to decide relevance or get the gist.

  13. What is scanning, and how does it differ from skimming?

Scanning is reading rapidly to locate specific information (a name, date, keyword). Skimming seeks the general idea; scanning seeks a particular detail.

  14. What is the SQ3R reading method?

A study technique: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review โ€” a structured approach to comprehend and retain text.

  15. What is active reading?

Engaging with a text by questioning, annotating, summarizing, and predicting, rather than reading passively, to deepen comprehension and retention.

  16. What is the topic sentence of a paragraph, and why find it?

The sentence stating the paragraph's main idea, usually first or last. Identifying it helps a reader quickly understand the paragraph's central point.

  17. What is intensive reading versus extensive reading?

Intensive reading is careful, detailed reading of a short text for full comprehension. Extensive reading is broad, fluent reading of longer texts for general understanding and pleasure.

  18. What is an inference in reading comprehension?

A logical conclusion drawn from textual evidence and reasoning rather than from explicitly stated information; reading 'between the lines.'

  19. How does an inference differ from a direct statement?

A direct statement is explicitly written in the text; an inference is implied and must be deduced by combining clues with prior knowledge.

  20. What is the difference between an inference and an assumption?

An inference is a reasoned conclusion based on given evidence. An assumption is an unstated belief taken for granted without proof or evidence in the text.

  21. What steps help a reader make a valid inference?

Identify relevant textual clues, combine them with background knowledge, and reason logically to a conclusion that the evidence supports without contradiction.

  22. What are context clues?

Hints within surrounding words or sentences that help a reader figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word without a dictionary.

  23. Name the main types of context clues.

Definition/explanation, synonym/restatement, antonym/contrast, example/illustration, and inference (general sense from context).

  24. What is a contrast context clue, and what signal words mark it?

A clue revealing meaning through an opposite idea. Signal words: but, however, unlike, although, whereas, on the contrary, instead.

What this deck covers

The English deck follows the UPSC CDS English syllabus โ€” 2 chapters and 6 topics โ€” so questions land on material that is genuinely examinable rather than trivia around it. That works out to roughly 25.0 cards per chapter.

Answers are written to be recallable, not just readable โ€” averaging about 143 characters, which is long enough to carry the reasoning and short enough to say out loud.

A deck like this earns its keep on the second and third pass. Read the syllabus first so you know the shape of the subject, then use the cards to find the specific facts that have not stuck.
