What is the distributive property?
a(b + c) = ab + ac; multiply the outside factor by each term inside the parentheses.
What are the steps to solve a one-variable linear equation like 2x + 3 = 11?
Use inverse operations to isolate the variable: subtract 3 (2x = 8), then divide by 2 (x = 4).
What must you do to an inequality when you multiply or divide both sides by a negative number?
Reverse the direction of the inequality sign.
What is the slope-intercept form of a linear equation, and what does each part mean?
y = mx + b, where m is the slope (rate of change) and b is the y-intercept (value of y when x = 0).
What is a system of linear equations, and what does its solution represent?
Two or more linear equations considered together; the solution is the point (x, y) that satisfies all equations, i.e., where their graphs intersect.
How many solutions can a system of two linear equations have, and what does each case mean graphically?
One solution (lines intersect), no solution (parallel lines), or infinitely many solutions (same line).
What is a function?
A relation in which each input (x) has exactly one output (y).
What is the vertical line test?
A graph represents a function if no vertical line crosses it more than once.
How do you find the rate of change (slope) between two points (x₁, y₁) and (x₂, y₂)?
Slope = (y₂ − y₁) / (x₂ − x₁), the change in y divided by the change in x.
What is the sum of the interior angles of a triangle?
180 degrees.
What are complementary angles and supplementary angles?
Complementary angles sum to 90°; supplementary angles sum to 180°.
What is the difference between similar figures and congruent figures?
Congruent figures have the same shape and size; similar figures have the same shape with proportional sides (equal angles, scaled sides).
What is the formula for the area of a triangle and the area of a rectangle?
Triangle: A = ½ × base × height. Rectangle: A = length × width.
What is the formula for the circumference and the area of a circle?
Circumference: C = 2πr (or πd). Area: A = πr².
What is the formula for the volume of a rectangular prism, and of a cylinder?
Rectangular prism: V = length × width × height. Cylinder: V = πr²h.
What is surface area, and how is it generally found for a solid?
The total area of all the faces (outer surfaces) of a solid; find it by adding the areas of every face or by using the net of the solid.
On the coordinate plane, what do the coordinates in an ordered pair (x, y) tell you?
x is the horizontal distance from the origin (right/left); y is the vertical distance (up/down).
What are the signs of the coordinates in each of the four quadrants?
Quadrant I (+,+), Quadrant II (−,+), Quadrant III (−,−), Quadrant IV (+,−).
What is the Pythagorean Theorem, and when does it apply?
a² + b² = c², where c is the hypotenuse; it applies only to right triangles, relating the legs a and b to the hypotenuse c.
How do you use the Pythagorean Theorem to find a leg when the hypotenuse and one leg are known?
Rearrange to a² = c² − b², then take the square root: a = √(c² − b²).
What is the difference between the mean, median, and mode of a data set?
Mean = sum of values ÷ number of values (average); median = middle value when ordered; mode = most frequently occurring value.
What is the range of a data set, and how is it calculated?
A measure of spread; range = maximum value − minimum value.
Which type of graph is best for showing parts of a whole, and which for showing change over time?
A circle (pie) graph shows parts of a whole; a line graph shows change over time.
What is the formula for the probability of a single event, and what range of values can it take?
P(event) = (number of favorable outcomes) / (total number of possible outcomes); its value ranges from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain).
