What is the difference between sediment deposited by water and sediment deposited by glaciers?
Water-deposited sediment is sorted (layered by size) and the particles become rounded; glacial sediment (till) is unsorted, with mixed sizes and angular, unworn fragments.
What three factors most influence the development of a landscape's features?
Climate (weathering type/rate), bedrock type/structure (resistance to weathering), and time/elevation/uplift. Together with stream action these determine whether a landscape is rugged or gentle.
How does climate influence whether a landscape has rounded versus angular, steep features?
Humid climates with abundant water produce rounded, gentle hills and well-developed stream valleys; arid climates produce angular, steep cliffs and sharp features because there is little chemical weathering or vegetation.
What is the difference between a mountain, a plateau, and a plain landscape region?
Mountains have high elevation, steep slopes, and distorted/faulted rock; plateaus have high elevation but flat-lying (horizontal) rock layers; plains have low elevation and flat-lying sedimentary layers.
List the main atmospheric variables measured by meteorologists.
Temperature, air pressure, humidity (moisture), wind speed and direction, cloud cover, and precipitation.
What is the relationship between air temperature and air pressure (all else equal)?
Warm air is less dense and rises, creating low pressure; cold air is denser and sinks, creating high pressure. So generally, as temperature increases, air pressure decreases.
What are the dewpoint and relative humidity, and how are they related to condensation?
Dewpoint is the temperature to which air must cool to reach saturation; relative humidity is the percent of moisture the air holds compared to its maximum. When air temperature reaches the dewpoint (100% relative humidity), condensation occurs.
In which direction does wind blow relative to pressure, and how does the Coriolis effect alter it?
Wind blows from high pressure toward low pressure. The Coriolis effect (Earth's rotation) deflects wind to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere.
Describe the air movement and weather associated with high-pressure and low-pressure systems.
High pressure (anticyclone): sinking air, diverging clockwise (N. Hemisphere), generally clear/dry weather. Low pressure (cyclone): rising air, converging counterclockwise (N. Hemisphere), generally cloudy/stormy weather.
What is the difference between a warm front and a cold front, and what weather does each bring?
A cold front is cold air pushing under warm air, causing rapid uplift, brief heavy storms, then cooler/clearer weather. A warm front is warm air riding over cold air, causing gradual, widespread, prolonged precipitation followed by warming.
What are the four main types of air masses based on source region?
Continental (dry) vs. maritime (moist), and polar/arctic (cold) vs. tropical (warm). Examples: maritime tropical (mT) = warm and humid; continental polar (cP) = cold and dry.
Under what conditions do hurricanes form, and where do they get their energy?
Hurricanes form over warm tropical ocean water (above ~27°C) where moist rising air releases latent heat from condensation, which powers the storm. They are low-pressure systems with strong rotating winds.
What is the difference between weather and climate?
Weather is the day-to-day condition of the atmosphere at a place (temperature, precipitation, etc.); climate is the long-term average pattern of weather over many years for a region.
What are the major factors that determine a region's climate?
Latitude (angle of insolation), elevation, proximity to large bodies of water, ocean currents, prevailing winds, and mountain barriers (windward vs. leeward/rain shadow).
How do nearby oceans affect the climate of coastal areas (marine vs. continental climate)?
Water heats and cools slowly, so coastal/marine climates have milder, more moderate temperatures (cooler summers, warmer winters) and more moisture, while inland/continental climates have greater temperature extremes.
What is the rain shadow effect?
When moist air rises over a mountain (windward side), it cools, condenses, and drops precipitation; the descending air on the leeward side is dry, creating an arid rain shadow region.
What is the principle of superposition used in interpreting geologic history?
In undisturbed layers of sedimentary rock, the oldest layers are on the bottom and the youngest are on top.
How can an intrusion or a fault be used to determine relative age (cross-cutting relationships)?
A fault or igneous intrusion is younger than the rock layers it cuts through, because the rock had to exist before it could be faulted or intruded.
What is an unconformity, and what does it represent in geologic history?
An unconformity is a buried erosional surface (a gap in the rock record) representing a period of erosion or non-deposition, meaning some rock layers and time are missing.
What characteristics make a fossil a good index fossil?
A good index fossil comes from an organism that was geographically widespread, abundant, and existed for only a short period of geologic time, so it can be used to correlate and date rock layers.
How is radioactive decay (half-life) used to determine the absolute age of rocks?
A radioactive isotope decays to a stable daughter product at a constant rate measured in half-lives (the time for half the original isotope to decay). By measuring the ratio of remaining isotope to daughter product, the age is calculated; e.g., Carbon-14 (half-life 5,700 years) dates recent organic remains, while Uranium-238 dates very old rocks.
Describe the water cycle, naming its main processes.
Water moves continuously through evaporation (and transpiration from plants), condensation into clouds, precipitation (rain/snow), and runoff/infiltration that returns water to oceans and groundwater, driven by solar energy.
What is the difference between porosity and permeability of a soil or rock?
Porosity is the percentage of open pore space (how much water it can hold); permeability is how easily water can flow through the connected pores. A material can be porous but impermeable (e.g., clay) if pores are tiny and poorly connected.
What is the water table, and what is the zone of saturation?
The zone of saturation is the underground region where all pore spaces are completely filled with water; the water table is the upper boundary (top surface) of that saturated zone.
