What is the tallest building in the world, where is it, and how tall?
The Burj Khalifa in Dubai, UAE, at about 828 metres (163 floors), designed by architect Adrian Smith of SOM; completed in 2010.
What is the Eiffel Tower made of, who built it, and for what occasion?
It is made of wrought iron (a lattice structure), built by Gustave Eiffel's company for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World's Fair) in Paris; about 330 metres tall.
What is the Qutub Minar, where is it, and what is special about it?
A 73-metre tall victory tower (minaret) in Delhi, the tallest brick minaret in the world, begun by Qutb-ud-din Aibak (c. 1199), built in Indo-Islamic architecture with red sandstone and marble; a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What is the Konark Sun Temple designed to resemble?
The 13th-century Konark Sun Temple in Odisha is designed as a colossal chariot of the Sun God Surya, with 24 carved stone wheels and seven horses; built in the Kalinga (Nagara) style; a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What are the main ingredients of concrete, and what does each contribute?
Cement (binder), fine aggregate (sand), coarse aggregate (gravel/stone), and water. Cement and water form a paste that binds the aggregates; water enables the hydration reaction that hardens the mix.
Why is steel reinforcement added to concrete (RCC)?
Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension; steel bars (rebar) are strong in tension, so combining them as Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) lets the structure resist both compressive and tensile forces.
What is the difference between load-bearing and framed (skeleton) construction?
In load-bearing construction, walls carry the structural loads down to the foundation. In framed construction, a skeleton of columns and beams carries loads, so walls become non-structural infill/partitions, allowing taller buildings and larger openings.
Name four common building materials and one key property of each.
Brick (good compressive strength, fire-resistant), steel (high tensile strength, ductile), glass (transparent, brittle), and timber (renewable, good strength-to-weight ratio but combustible).
What is a 'green roof' and name two benefits.
A roof partly or fully covered with vegetation over a waterproof membrane. Benefits include thermal insulation (reducing heat gain/loss), managing stormwater runoff, and reducing the urban heat island effect.
What is a 'mixed-use development' in urban planning?
A development that combines two or more uses, residential, commercial, retail, cultural, in one building or area, reducing travel needs and creating active, walkable neighbourhoods.
What is a 'public space' / 'public realm' and give two examples.
Open spaces accessible to all people, that support social interaction and civic life. Examples: parks, plazas/town squares, streets, waterfront promenades and markets.
What is the 'neighbourhood unit' concept in urban planning?
A planning concept (Clarence Perry, 1920s) organizing a residential area around a central primary school within walking distance, with shops at the edges and through-traffic kept on the perimeter to create a self-contained, walkable community.
What is 'urban sprawl' and why is it considered a problem?
The uncontrolled, low-density spread of a city into surrounding areas. It is a problem because it increases car dependence, infrastructure costs, commute times, loss of farmland/green space, and environmental degradation.
What is climate-responsive (passive) design?
Design that uses a building's orientation, form, materials and openings to achieve comfort naturally, minimizing energy use, for example through natural ventilation, daylighting, shading and thermal mass, rather than relying on mechanical heating/cooling.
What is the ideal building orientation in hot climates of the Indian subcontinent, and why?
The longer faces should generally face north and south (minimizing east/west exposure) to reduce harsh low-angle morning and afternoon sun, with shaded openings, so the building gains less heat.
What is 'thermal mass' and how does it help in passive design?
The ability of a material (like thick stone, brick or concrete) to absorb, store and slowly release heat. It evens out indoor temperature swings, staying cool by day and releasing warmth at night, useful in hot-dry climates.
What is a 'chajja' / sunshade and a 'jaali' in Indian architecture, and what climate function do they serve?
A chajja is a projecting roof eave/overhang that shades walls and windows from sun and rain; a jaali is a perforated stone or latticed screen that provides shade, privacy and ventilation while filtering harsh light.
What does LEED stand for, and what is it?
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, an internationally recognized green-building rating/certification system that scores buildings on sustainability criteria such as energy, water, materials and indoor environmental quality.
What is GRIHA in the Indian context?
Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment, India's national green-building rating system (developed by TERI and the government) that evaluates a building's environmental performance over its life cycle.
What is rainwater harvesting and why is it important in sustainable design?
The collection and storage of rainwater from roofs and surfaces for reuse or groundwater recharge. It conserves water, reduces dependence on municipal/groundwater supply, and helps manage stormwater; it is mandatory in many Indian building bye-laws.
Define 'ecology' and 'ecosystem' in the context of environmental awareness.
Ecology is the study of the relationships between living organisms and their environment. An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with each other and their physical/non-living environment as a functional unit.
What is 'hardscape' versus 'softscape' in landscape architecture?
Hardscape refers to the built, non-living elements of a landscape (paths, walls, paving, water features, pergolas); softscape refers to the living elements (plants, trees, grass, shrubs, flowers).
In building bye-laws, what do FAR/FSI and 'setback' mean?
FAR (Floor Area Ratio) or FSI (Floor Space Index) is the ratio of a building's total floor area to the plot area, controlling permissible built density. A setback is the minimum open distance required between a building and its plot boundaries.
What is 'universal design' / barrier-free accessibility, and name two basic provisions.
Designing buildings and spaces usable by all people regardless of age or ability. Basic provisions include ramps (typically a maximum slope around 1:12), tactile paving for the visually impaired, accessible toilets, lifts, and handrails.
