    An independent clause expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence. A dependent (subordinate) clause cannot stand alone and relies on a main clause to complete its meaning.

  2. In reading comprehension, what is the difference between the main idea and a supporting detail?

    The main idea is the central point or message the author conveys in a passage. Supporting details are facts, examples, or reasons that explain, develop, or back up the main idea.

  3. What is the difference between a fact and an opinion in a reading passage?

    A fact is a statement that can be objectively verified as true. An opinion expresses a personal belief, judgment, or feeling that cannot be proven true or false.

  4. What does it mean to make an inference while reading?

    An inference is a logical conclusion the reader draws from evidence in the text combined with reasoning, rather than from information stated directly.

  5. What is narrative sequencing?

    Narrative sequencing is arranging events of a story or text in their correct logical or chronological order, often signalled by transition words such as 'first', 'then', 'next', 'finally'.

    One axis represents categories and the other represents a numerical scale. The length (or height) of each bar is proportional to the value it represents, allowing comparison across categories.

  8. What does a pie chart represent, and what does the whole circle equal?

    A pie chart represents parts of a whole as sectors of a circle. The whole circle equals 100% (or $360^{\circ}$), and each sector's size is proportional to its share.

    Divide the entry by the relevant total and, for a percentage, multiply by 100: $$\text{Percentage} = \frac{\text{Entry}}{\text{Total}} \times 100\%$$

  22. What is the difference between the active and the passive voice?

    In the active voice the subject performs the action ('The cat chased the mouse'). In the passive voice the subject receives the action ('The mouse was chased by the cat').

  23. What punctuation and structure define a complete sentence?

    A complete sentence must contain at least one independent clause with a subject and a finite verb, express a complete thought, begin with a capital letter, and end with a terminal punctuation mark (., ?, or !).

  24. When reading a passage to determine the author's tone, what is 'tone'?

    Tone is the author's attitude toward the subject or audience as revealed through word choice and style, e.g., formal, humorous, critical, optimistic, or sarcastic.
