How does an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) remove particulates?
It electrically charges particles in the flue gas, which are then attracted to and collected on oppositely charged plates; collected dust is periodically dislodged (rapped) and removed. ESPs achieve very high (often >99%) particulate removal efficiency.
What is the function of a scrubber in air pollution control?
A scrubber removes gaseous pollutants (e.g. SO2) and/or particulates by passing the gas stream through a liquid (usually water or an alkaline solution) that absorbs or captures the pollutants. Wet scrubbers handle both gases and particles.
What is Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) used for?
FGD is a technology to remove sulphur dioxide (SO2) from the exhaust flue gases of fossil-fuel power plants and industries, commonly using lime/limestone scrubbing to produce gypsum.
Name the three main stages of wastewater treatment and what each removes.
Primary (physical settling — removes suspended solids/grit by sedimentation); Secondary (biological — removes dissolved/colloidal organic matter via microbes, e.g. activated sludge); Tertiary (advanced — removes nutrients, pathogens, and residual pollutants via filtration, disinfection, etc.).
What is the activated sludge process?
A secondary (biological) wastewater treatment process in which aerated tanks use a microbial floc (activated sludge) to oxidize and consume organic matter; sludge is then settled, with part recycled back to maintain the microbial population.
What does BOD measure and why is it important in pollution control?
Biochemical Oxygen Demand measures the amount of dissolved oxygen consumed by microorganisms to break down organic matter in water over a set period (usually 5 days at 20 deg C). High BOD indicates high organic pollution and low water quality.
What is the difference between BOD and COD?
BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) measures oxygen used by microbes to degrade biodegradable organic matter; COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) measures oxygen needed to chemically oxidize all (biodegradable plus non-biodegradable) organic matter. COD is always greater than or equal to BOD.
Define Disaster Risk Management (DRM).
The systematic application of policies, strategies and practices to reduce disaster risks, manage residual risks, and strengthen resilience — encompassing prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.
Give the conceptual 'risk equation' used in disaster risk management.
Risk = Hazard x Vulnerability / Capacity (sometimes written Risk = Hazard x Vulnerability x Exposure). Risk rises with hazard and vulnerability/exposure and falls with coping capacity.
Define the terms Hazard, Vulnerability and Exposure in DRM.
Hazard = a potentially damaging physical event/phenomenon (e.g. flood, earthquake); Vulnerability = conditions that increase susceptibility to harm; Exposure = people, assets and systems located in hazard-prone areas.
What are the four phases of the Disaster Management Cycle?
Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery. (Pre-disaster: mitigation & preparedness; Post-disaster: response & recovery.)
What is the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and its time span?
The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 is the global UN agreement guiding disaster risk reduction, built on four priorities: understanding risk, strengthening risk governance, investing in resilience, and enhancing preparedness for 'Build Back Better'.
Which national authority leads disaster risk management in Pakistan, and under what law?

What are the two fundamental data models used to represent spatial data in GIS?
Vector data (points, lines, polygons representing discrete features) and Raster data (a grid of cells/pixels with values, representing continuous surfaces such as elevation or satellite imagery).
List the core components of a GIS.
Hardware, Software, Data (spatial and attribute), People (users/analysts), and Methods/Procedures.
What is the difference between GIS, GPS and Remote Sensing?
GPS (Global Positioning System) provides precise location/coordinates via satellites; Remote Sensing acquires data about the Earth's surface from sensors (satellites/aircraft) without contact; GIS stores, integrates and analyzes such spatial data. They are complementary geospatial technologies.
Name three applications of GIS in environmental management.
Land-use planning and mapping, natural resource and biodiversity assessment, pollution/hazard mapping, disaster risk and flood modelling, EIA spatial analysis, and watershed management (any three).
In GIS, what is a 'layer' (theme)?
A layer is a thematic set of geographic data of a single type (e.g. roads, rivers, land use, soils) that can be overlaid with other layers; stacking and analyzing multiple layers enables integrated spatial analysis (overlay analysis).
What is an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) in the context of EIA?
A document produced as the outcome of EIA that specifies the mitigation measures, monitoring requirements, institutional responsibilities and timelines to manage a project's environmental impacts during construction and operation.
What is the purpose of 'public participation' in the EIA process?
To inform and consult affected stakeholders and the public, incorporate local knowledge and concerns, increase transparency and accountability, and improve the quality and acceptability of decisions on the proposed project.
What is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and which ISO standards govern it?
LCA is a technique to assess the environmental impacts of a product or service across its entire life cycle — from raw material extraction ('cradle') through production, use and disposal ('grave'). It is governed by ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.
