Luminous efficacy is the light output produced per unit of electrical power consumed, calculated as $\text{efficacy} = \frac{\text{luminous flux (lm)}}{\text{power (W)}}$, with the unit lumens per watt (lm/W).
What is the difference between an estimate and a quotation?
An estimate is an approximate, non-binding indication of likely cost. A quotation is a fixed, legally binding offer to do the work for a stated price once accepted.
List the main cost components an estimator must include when pricing an electrical job.
Materials, labour (hours × rate), plant/equipment hire, overheads (running costs of the business), profit margin, and allowances for waste, contingencies and preliminaries.
How is the labour cost for a task calculated?
$\text{Labour cost} = \text{number of hours} \times \text{hourly labour rate}$, often summed across all operatives and added to a percentage for non-productive time.
What is the purpose of a 'requisition' in the procurement process?
A requisition is an internal request to authorise and order required materials, specifying quantities, descriptions and delivery needs, before a purchase order is raised to a supplier.

Why must accurate site records and as-fitted drawings be kept?

Define 'microgeneration' in the context of sustainable technologies.
The small-scale generation of low-carbon heat and/or electricity by individuals, small businesses and communities to meet their own needs — typically systems under about 50 kWe (electrical) or 300 kWth (heat).
Name four common microgeneration technologies an electrician may encounter.
Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, micro-wind turbines, micro/small-scale hydro, and (heat) ground/air source heat pumps, solar thermal and micro-combined heat and power (micro-CHP).
How does a solar photovoltaic (PV) cell generate electricity?
Through the photovoltaic effect: photons of sunlight striking a semiconductor (silicon) p-n junction free electrons, producing a DC voltage; an inverter then converts the DC to AC for use/export.
Why is an inverter essential in a grid-connected solar PV system?
PV panels produce direct current (DC), but the grid and most appliances use alternating current (AC). The inverter converts DC to synchronised 230 V AC and provides grid-protection (anti-islanding) functions.
Compare an air source heat pump (ASHP) with a ground source heat pump (GSHP).
Both move heat using a refrigeration cycle. ASHP extracts heat from outside air — cheaper/easier to install but less efficient in cold weather. GSHP extracts heat from the ground via buried loops — higher install cost but more stable, higher efficiency.
Define the Coefficient of Performance (COP) of a heat pump and give a typical value.
COP is the ratio of useful heat output to electrical energy input: $\text{COP} = \frac{\text{heat output (kW)}}{\text{electrical input (kW)}}$. Typical values are around 3 to 4, meaning 3–4 kW of heat per 1 kW of electricity.
What is the difference between solar thermal and solar PV systems?
Solar thermal collectors capture the sun's heat to warm water (hot water/heating). Solar PV converts sunlight directly into electricity. Thermal = heat; PV = electricity.
List four energy efficiency measures that reduce a building's electrical demand.
LED lighting, occupancy/PIR and daylight (lux) controls, high-efficiency (low-loss) appliances and motors with variable speed drives, improved insulation, and power factor correction.
How does power factor correction improve energy efficiency?
By adding capacitance to offset inductive loads, it raises the power factor toward unity, reducing reactive current and $I^{2}R$ losses in cables, so less current is drawn for the same useful (real) power.
What does the energy efficiency relationship between real, apparent and reactive power look like, and what is power factor?
$\text{Apparent power } S = \sqrt{P^{2} + Q^{2}}$ (VA), and power factor $\text{pf} = \cos\phi = \frac{P}{S}$, where $P$ is real power (W) and $Q$ is reactive power (VAr).
How do occupancy sensors and daylight (constant illuminance) controls save energy?
Occupancy/PIR sensors switch lighting off when spaces are unoccupied; daylight/photocell controls dim or switch luminaires when sufficient natural light is present — both cut unnecessary lighting energy use.
What is the waste hierarchy used in sustainable waste management, in order of preference?
1) Prevent/reduce, 2) Reuse, 3) Recycle, 4) Recovery (e.g. energy from waste), 5) Disposal (landfill) as the last resort.
Under the WEEE Regulations, how must old electrical and electronic equipment be handled?
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment must be collected separately and sent for proper recovery, recycling or treatment (not landfill), so hazardous substances are controlled and materials recovered.
Why must a site waste management plan segregate materials such as copper, cardboard and hazardous items?
Segregation maximises recycling/reuse value (e.g. copper offcuts), reduces landfill cost and tax, and ensures hazardous wastes (e.g. fluorescent tubes containing mercury) are disposed of safely and legally.
Describe how electric vehicle (EV) charging is classified by 'Mode'.
Mode 1: basic socket, no protection (not permitted for public). Mode 2: cable with in-line control/protection box. Mode 3: dedicated AC charge point with control/communication (most common domestic/commercial). Mode 4: DC rapid charging with off-board converter.
Name two emerging technologies, besides EV charging, that are changing electrical installation work.
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) used with PV, smart home/building automation (IoT controls, smart meters), and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) systems that feed EV battery energy back to the grid.
