What are the components of a 'just culture' in safety management?
A just culture balances accountability and learning: honest human error and at-risk behaviour are treated as learning opportunities (not punished), while reckless or wilful violations are still subject to disciplinary action, encouraging open reporting.
Why is the reporting of near-misses important to a positive safety culture?
Near-misses are precursors to accidents that occur far more frequently than actual harm; reporting and analysing them reveals latent hazards and weak controls, allowing prevention before an injury or loss occurs.
State the most widely cited definition of sustainable development (Brundtland, 1987).

Define embodied carbon and contrast it with operational carbon.
Embodied carbon is the greenhouse-gas emissions associated with materials and processes across a product's/asset's life cycle (extraction, manufacture, construction, end-of-life). Operational carbon is the emissions from energy used during the in-use phase. Total carbon is the sum of both.
What is a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and which standards govern it?
LCA is a systematic technique for evaluating the environmental impacts (e.g. carbon, water, resource depletion) of a product or service across its whole life cycle. It is standardised by ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.
What is the UK's legally binding net zero target and under which Act was it set?
Net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, set under the Climate Change Act 2008 as amended in 2019 (originally an 80% reduction on 1990 levels, raised to 100%).
What is the difference between climate change mitigation and climate change adaptation?
Mitigation reduces or prevents emissions of greenhouse gases to limit the extent of future climate change (e.g. decarbonising energy). Adaptation adjusts systems and infrastructure to cope with the impacts of climate change that are already occurring or unavoidable (e.g. flood defences).
Define resilience in the context of engineered infrastructure.
Resilience is the ability of an asset or system to anticipate, absorb, adapt to and rapidly recover from disruptive events (such as extreme weather, flooding or cyber attack) while maintaining essential functions.
What does the concept of 'biodiversity net gain' require of engineering and development projects?
It requires that a development leaves the natural environment in a measurably better state than beforehand — achieving a net increase in biodiversity (in England a mandatory minimum of 10%) through on-site or off-site habitat creation/enhancement.
Give two examples of how engineers can design for climate adaptation in infrastructure.
Examples: sizing drainage and flood defences for higher rainfall/sea-level scenarios; using sustainable drainage systems (SuDS); selecting heat-tolerant materials; providing redundancy and cooling for equipment; and locating critical assets away from flood-prone areas.
What societal responsibilities does the engineering profession recognise beyond technical delivery?
Acting in the public interest and for societal benefit, promoting public understanding of engineering, considering social impact and inclusion of affected communities, and improving quality of life while protecting health, safety and the environment.
What do Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) mean as distinct concepts?
Equality means treating people fairly and giving equal opportunity; diversity means valuing the range of differences among people; inclusion means creating an environment where all individuals feel respected, able to participate and to contribute fully.
Which UK legislation underpins EDI obligations, and what does it define?

What does the IET require of members regarding CPD, and roughly how is it expected to be undertaken?
Members are obliged to maintain and develop competence through ongoing CPD, to plan it against their needs (often using a Plan–Do–Reflect cycle), to record it, and to be prepared to provide evidence; the IET monitors CPD through sampling/audit.
Describe the reflective CPD cycle commonly recommended (e.g. by the IET).
A continuous cycle: identify learning/development needs; plan how to address them; carry out the development activities (Do); reflect on what was learned and its impact; and record the outcomes — then repeat, feeding back into the next set of needs.
Distinguish 'maintaining' competence from 'broadening' competence in CPD.
Maintaining competence keeps existing knowledge and skills current with evolving technology, standards and regulation. Broadening competence develops new areas — additional technical fields, management, leadership or commercial skills — to extend capability and support career growth.
