State the second law of thermodynamics in terms of entropy.
The entropy of the universe increases for any spontaneous (irreversible) process: ΔS_universe > 0.
What is the relationship between ΔG° and the equilibrium constant K?
ΔG° = -RT ln K.
What are the seven crystal systems in solid state chemistry?
Cubic, Tetragonal, Orthorhombic, Monoclinic, Triclinic, Hexagonal, and Rhombohedral (Trigonal).
Give the number of atoms per unit cell for simple cubic, BCC, and FCC.
Simple cubic = 1, Body-centred cubic (BCC) = 2, Face-centred cubic (FCC) = 4 atoms per unit cell.
What are the packing efficiencies of SC, BCC, and FCC?
Simple cubic = 52.4%, BCC = 68%, FCC/CCP = 74%.
Distinguish between Schottky and Frenkel defects.
Schottky: equal numbers of cations and anions missing (decreases density). Frenkel: ion displaced to an interstitial site (density unchanged).
State the law of chemical equilibrium / law of mass action.
At equilibrium, the rate of a reaction is proportional to the product of the active masses (concentrations) of reactants, each raised to its stoichiometric coefficient.
What is the relationship between Kp and Kc?
Kp = Kc(RT)^Δn, where Δn = (moles of gaseous products) - (moles of gaseous reactants).
State Le Chatelier's principle.
When a system at equilibrium is disturbed by a change in concentration, temperature, or pressure, it shifts to counteract the change and re-establish equilibrium.
Define pH and write its formula.
pH is the negative logarithm of hydrogen ion concentration. pH = -log[H⁺]. For neutral water at 25°C, pH = 7.
What is the ionic product of water (Kw) at 25°C?
Kw = [H⁺][OH⁻] = 1.0×10⁻¹⁴ mol²/L². Also pH + pOH = 14.
State the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation for an acidic buffer.
pH = pKa + log([salt]/[acid]).
Define a buffer solution.
A solution that resists change in pH on addition of small amounts of acid or base; made of a weak acid and its salt (or weak base and its salt).
Define the common ion effect.
The suppression of ionization of a weak electrolyte by adding a strong electrolyte that has an ion in common with it.
Define solubility product (Ksp) for a salt AB.
Ksp = [A⁺][B⁻], the product of ionic concentrations in a saturated solution at equilibrium. Precipitation occurs when ionic product exceeds Ksp.
State Raoult's law for a solution of two volatile liquids.
The partial vapour pressure of each component is proportional to its mole fraction: P_total = P°_A x_A + P°_B x_B.
Name the four colligative properties of solutions.
Relative lowering of vapour pressure, elevation of boiling point, depression of freezing point, and osmotic pressure.
Define the van't Hoff factor (i).
The ratio of observed colligative property to the calculated (normal) value; i = (observed moles of particles)/(moles before dissociation/association). i>1 for dissociation, i<1 for association.
State Henry's law for solubility of gases.
At constant temperature, the solubility (mole fraction) of a gas in a liquid is proportional to the partial pressure of the gas: p = K_H · x.
Write the Nernst equation for an electrode at 298 K.
E = E° - (0.0591/n) log Q, where n is the number of electrons transferred and Q is the reaction quotient.
State Faraday's first law of electrolysis.
The mass of substance deposited at an electrode is directly proportional to the quantity of electricity (charge) passed: m = ZIt. One Faraday = 96500 C.
What is the integrated rate law and half-life for a first-order reaction?
k = (2.303/t) log([A]₀/[A]); half-life t₁/₂ = 0.693/k (independent of initial concentration).
State the Arrhenius equation relating rate constant and temperature.
k = A·e^(-Ea/RT), where A is the frequency factor and Ea is the activation energy.
Distinguish between physisorption and chemisorption.
Physisorption: weak van der Waals forces, reversible, low enthalpy, decreases with temperature. Chemisorption: chemical bonds, irreversible, high enthalpy, specific.
