1. What reading strategy is 'scanning', and when is it used?

   Scanning is reading a text quickly to locate specific information (a name, date, number, or short answer) without reading every word. It is used to find short, factual answers fast.

2. When scanning a passage for a short answer, what should you do first?

   Identify the key word(s) in the question, then move your eyes quickly over the text to find that word or a synonym of it, and read only the surrounding sentence.

3. What does 'deducing meaning from context' mean?

   Working out the meaning of an unfamiliar word by using surrounding clues in the sentence or passage, rather than a dictionary.

4. List four types of context clues used to deduce word meaning.

   Definition/explanation clues, synonym/restatement clues, antonym/contrast clues, and example or inference clues.

5. What is figurative language?

   Language that uses words beyond their literal meaning to create images or effects, e.g. similes, metaphors, personification, and hyperbole.

6. What is the difference between a simile and a metaphor?

   A simile compares two things using 'like' or 'as' (e.g. brave as a lion); a metaphor states one thing is another directly (e.g. he is a lion).

7. Define personification and give an example.

   Personification gives human qualities to non-human things or ideas. Example: 'The wind whispered through the trees.'

8. What is hyperbole?

   A deliberate exaggeration used for emphasis or effect, not meant to be taken literally (e.g. 'I've told you a million times').

9. What is the difference between literal and figurative meaning?

   Literal meaning is the exact, dictionary meaning of words; figurative meaning is an implied or symbolic meaning created through devices like metaphor or irony.

10. What is connotation versus denotation?

    Denotation is a word's exact dictionary definition; connotation is the emotional or cultural association a word carries (e.g. 'childish' vs 'youthful').

11. What is tone in a piece of writing?

    Tone is the writer's attitude toward the subject or audience, conveyed through word choice and style (e.g. formal, sarcastic, sympathetic).

12. What is the difference between a synonym and an antonym?

    A synonym is a word with the same or similar meaning; an antonym is a word with the opposite meaning.

13. What is a homophone? Give an example.

    A word that sounds the same as another but has a different meaning and usually spelling, e.g. 'their', 'there', and 'they're'.
