A depression is an area of low pressure where warm and cold air masses meet and air rises. It brings unsettled weather: cloud, rain, strong winds and changeable conditions as warm and cold fronts pass over.
In a UK depression, what weather is associated with the passing of the warm front, the warm sector, and the cold front?
Warm front: steady, prolonged rain and rising temperature. Warm sector: drizzle/cloud, mild and humid, steady pressure. Cold front: heavy bursts of rain, falling temperature, then clearing skies with showers behind.
On a UK synoptic weather chart, what do isobars represent and how does their spacing indicate wind speed?
Isobars are lines joining points of equal atmospheric pressure (measured in millibars). Closely spaced isobars indicate a steep pressure gradient and strong winds; widely spaced isobars indicate light winds.

How is a pyramidal peak (horn) formed in a glaciated landscape?
Three or more corries erode back-to-back into the same mountain. The continued backward erosion of the corrie walls leaves a sharp, steep-sided pointed summit known as a pyramidal peak (e.g. an Aiguille).
In a coastal landscape, describe the sequence by which a headland erodes into a stack.
A crack in the headland is widened by erosion into a cave; the cave erodes through to form an arch; the arch roof collapses leaving an isolated pillar (stack); the stack is further undercut and collapses to a stump.
Name three river erosion processes and briefly define each.
Hydraulic action: force of water dislodging material. Abrasion (corrasion): load scraping/grinding the bed and banks. Attrition: load particles colliding and breaking into smaller, rounder pieces. (Solution also dissolves soluble rock.)
How is a waterfall and gorge formed along a river's course?
Water flows over hard rock onto softer rock; the soft rock erodes faster creating a step. The plunge pool undercuts the hard rock, which overhangs and collapses. Repeated collapse makes the waterfall retreat upstream, leaving a steep-sided gorge.
