Isobars are lines joining places of equal atmospheric pressure. When they are close together the pressure changes rapidly over a short distance, indicating strong winds.

As the warm front passes, there is steady, prolonged rainfall from nimbostratus cloud, followed by a rise in temperature and a clearing of skies in the warm sector.
What weather is typically brought by an area of high pressure (anticyclone) over the UK in summer?
Warm, dry, sunny and settled weather with light winds and clear skies, because descending air prevents cloud formation.
What is relief (orographic) rainfall and how does it form?
Relief rainfall forms when moist air is forced to rise over high ground (hills or mountains). As the air rises it cools, water vapour condenses to form cloud, and rain falls on the windward side; the leeward side is left in a drier rain shadow.
Define weathering and explain how it differs from erosion.
Weathering is the breakdown or decay of rock in its original place (in situ). Erosion is the wearing away AND removal of rock and material by agents such as rivers, ice, wind or the sea.

Water collects in cracks in rock. When temperatures fall below $0^{\circ}\text{C}$ the water freezes and expands by about 9%, putting pressure on the rock. Repeated freezing and thawing widens the cracks until pieces of rock break off (scree).
Describe how a corrie (cirque) is formed by glacial erosion.
Snow collects in a hollow on a mountainside and compacts into ice. The ice erodes the hollow deeper by abrasion and plucking, while freeze-thaw steepens the back wall. When the ice melts, a deep armchair-shaped hollow remains, often holding a small lake called a tarn.
What are the four main river processes that transport material, from heaviest to lightest load?
Traction (large rocks rolled along the bed), saltation (smaller stones bounced along), suspension (fine material carried in the flow), and solution (dissolved minerals carried in the water).
How is a waterfall formed where a band of hard rock lies over softer rock?
The soft rock is eroded faster than the hard rock, creating a step. The falling water erodes a plunge pool at the base by hydraulic action and abrasion, undercutting the hard rock. The overhang eventually collapses and the waterfall retreats upstream, leaving a gorge.

Waves approach the beach at an angle (the same direction as the prevailing wind), so the swash carries material up the beach at an angle. The backwash returns it straight down the slope under gravity. This zig-zag movement transports sediment along the coast.
Explain how a spit is formed by coastal deposition.
Longshore drift transports material along the coast. Where the coastline changes direction (e.g. at a river mouth), material is deposited in the open water, building an extended ridge of sand or shingle called a spit, often with a hooked end shaped by changing wind direction.
Give two land uses that often come into conflict in a UK National Park, and explain why.
Examples include tourism/recreation versus farming, or quarrying versus conservation. Conflict arises because tourists may drop litter, leave gates open, or erode footpaths, which damages farmland and the natural environment that conservationists wish to protect.
Why are upland glaciated areas often used for hill sheep farming rather than arable farming?
Steep slopes, thin infertile soils, high rainfall, low temperatures and a short growing season make crop growing difficult. Hardy sheep can survive these conditions and graze the rough grassland.
