    A body remains at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force. It is also called the law of inertia.

  2. What does Newton's Second Law of Motion state, and give its formula?

    The rate of change of momentum is directly proportional to the applied force and acts in the direction of the force. Formula: F = ma (force = mass x acceleration).

  3. State Newton's Third Law of Motion.

    For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The two forces act on different bodies.

  4. Define momentum and give its SI unit.

    Momentum is the product of an object's mass and velocity (p = mv). Its SI unit is kilogram metre per second (kg m/s).

  5. What is inertia, and on what does it depend?

    Inertia is the tendency of a body to resist any change in its state of rest or motion. It depends on the mass of the body; more mass means more inertia.

  6. Define work in physics and give its SI unit and formula.

    Work is done when a force moves a body in the direction of the force. W = Force x displacement (W = F x d). SI unit is the joule (J).

  7. What are the formulas for kinetic energy and potential energy?

    Kinetic energy KE = (1/2)mv^2. Gravitational potential energy PE = mgh, where m = mass, g = acceleration due to gravity, h = height.

  8. State the law of conservation of energy.

    Energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only be transformed from one form to another. The total energy of an isolated system remains constant.

  9. Define power and give its SI unit and formula.

    Power is the rate of doing work. Power = Work / time (P = W/t). SI unit is the watt (W); 1 watt = 1 joule/second.

  10. How many joules are in 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh)?

    1 kWh = 3.6 x 10^6 joules (3,600,000 J). It is the commercial unit of electrical energy.

  11. State the laws of reflection of light.

    1) The angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. 2) The incident ray, the reflected ray, and the normal at the point of incidence all lie in the same plane.

  12. What type of image does a plane mirror form?

    A virtual, erect image of the same size as the object, laterally inverted, formed as far behind the mirror as the object is in front of it.

  13. Which type of mirror is used as a vehicle rear-view mirror and why?

    A convex mirror, because it always forms a small, erect, virtual image and gives a wider field of view.

  14. Define refraction of light.

    Refraction is the bending of light as it passes from one transparent medium to another due to a change in its speed.

  15. What causes the dispersion of white light into a spectrum?

    Different colours (wavelengths) of light bend by different amounts when passing through a prism; violet bends most and red least, splitting white light into seven colours (VIBGYOR).

  16. State Ohm's Law and its formula.

    At constant temperature, the current through a conductor is directly proportional to the voltage across it. V = IR (voltage = current x resistance).

  17. Give the SI units of electric current, voltage, and resistance.

    Current: ampere (A); Voltage (potential difference): volt (V); Resistance: ohm (Ohm).

  18. How does resistance combine in series and in parallel?

    Series: R = R1 + R2 + R3 (resistances add up). Parallel: 1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3 (total resistance is less than the smallest).

  19. What is the formula for electric power in terms of voltage and current?

    P = VI. It can also be written as P = I^2R or P = V^2/R.
