What are the eight parts of speech in English?
Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction, and Interjection.
Define a noun and name its main types.
A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea. Types: proper, common, collective, abstract, concrete, and countable/uncountable.
What is the difference between an adjective and an adverb?
An adjective modifies a noun or pronoun (a quick runner); an adverb modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb (runs quickly).
What is a conjunction? Give the three coordinating types.
A conjunction joins words, phrases, or clauses. Three types: coordinating (FANBOYS), subordinating (because, although), and correlative (either...or).
What are the three articles, and how are they classified?
A, an (indefinite articles) and the (definite article).
When do you use 'a' versus 'an'?
Use 'a' before a consonant SOUND (a university, a one-eyed) and 'an' before a vowel SOUND (an hour, an MBA). It depends on sound, not spelling.
List the twelve tenses in English.
Present/Past/Future, each in four aspects: Simple, Continuous (Progressive), Perfect, and Perfect Continuous = 12 tenses.
What is the structure of the Present Perfect tense?
Subject + has/have + past participle (V3). Example: She has finished her work.
What is the structure of the Past Continuous tense?
Subject + was/were + verb-ing. Example: They were playing cricket.
What is the structure of the Future Perfect tense?
Subject + will have + past participle (V3). Example: I will have completed it by Monday.
Which tense is used for a habitual or universal truth?
The Simple Present tense. Example: The sun rises in the east; I go to school daily.
What signal words typically indicate the Present Perfect Continuous tense?
Since (point of time) and for (duration), with has/have been + verb-ing. Example: He has been working since 9 a.m.
State the basic Subject-Verb Agreement rule.
A singular subject takes a singular verb; a plural subject takes a plural verb. Example: He runs / They run.
In subject-verb agreement, which verb follows two subjects joined by 'either...or' or 'neither...nor'?
The verb agrees with the subject NEAREST to it. Example: Neither the boys nor the teacher is present.
Do 'each, every, everyone, somebody, nobody' take singular or plural verbs?
Singular. Example: Each of the students has a book; Everyone is here.
What verb do collective nouns (team, family, jury) take?
Usually singular when acting as one unit (The team wins); plural when members act individually (The team are arguing).
When two subjects are joined by 'and' but refer to one person or idea, is the verb singular or plural?
Singular. Example: Bread and butter is my breakfast; The poet and statesman is dead.
Which prepositions are used with the words 'married, angry, and afraid'?
Married TO, angry WITH (a person) / angry AT (a thing), afraid OF.
Give the correct prepositions: 'good ___, capable ___, fond ___.'
Good AT, capable OF, fond OF.
What is the rule for using 'since' versus 'for' with time?
Use 'since' with a point in time (since 2010, since Monday) and 'for' with a period/duration (for two hours, for three years).
What is the difference between 'between' and 'among'?
Use 'between' for two persons/things; use 'among' for more than two.
Define a synonym and an antonym.
A synonym is a word with the same or similar meaning (happy/joyful); an antonym is a word with the opposite meaning (happy/sad).
Give a synonym and an antonym for 'benevolent'.
Synonym: kind/generous. Antonym: malevolent/cruel.
