1. What are the four sections of the IELTS Academic test, in the order they are usually taken?

   Listening, Reading, Writing (taken together in that order), and Speaking. Speaking may be scheduled on the same day or up to 7 days before or after the other three sections.

2. What is the total duration of the IELTS test across all four sections?

   About 2 hours 45 minutes: Listening ~30 minutes (+10 minutes answer-transfer time on paper), Reading 60 minutes, Writing 60 minutes, and Speaking 11–14 minutes.

3. Describe the format of the IELTS Listening section: number of parts, number of questions, and timing.

   4 parts (recordings) with 40 questions in total, lasting about 30 minutes. On the paper-based test you get an extra 10 minutes to transfer answers to the answer sheet; on computer you get only ~2 minutes to check answers. Each recording is played once only.

    Band 5 = "Modest user" (partial command, copes with overall meaning, makes many mistakes). Band 4 = "Limited user" (basic competence limited to familiar situations, frequent problems with understanding and expression).

    "Did not attempt the test" — the candidate provided no assessable information (Band 1 is a "Non-user" who has essentially no ability beyond a few isolated words).

19. How is the IELTS Overall Band Score calculated from the four section scores?

    It is the arithmetic mean of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest whole or half band: $$\text{Overall} = \frac{L + R + W + S}{4}$$ For example, $\frac{6.5 + 6.5 + 5.0 + 7.0}{4} = 6.25$, which is reported as 6.5.

20. What is the IELTS rounding rule when the average of the four section scores ends in $.25$ or $.75$?

    Averages ending in $.25$ are rounded up to the next half band, and averages ending in $.75$ are rounded up to the next whole band. Example: a mean of $6.25 \to 6.5$ and a mean of $6.75 \to 7.0$; but a mean of $6.125 \to 6.0$ (nearest half band).

21. Roughly how many correct answers out of 40 are needed in IELTS Listening for Bands 5, 6, 7 and 8?
