Define scalar and vector quantities, giving one example of each.
A scalar has only magnitude (e.g., distance, speed, mass). A vector has both magnitude and direction (e.g., displacement, velocity, force).
What is the difference between distance and displacement?
Distance is the total path length covered (scalar, always positive). Displacement is the shortest straight-line distance from start to finish with direction (vector, can be zero or negative).
Define speed and give its SI unit.
Speed is the distance travelled per unit time; speed = distance/time. SI unit: metre per second (m/s).
Define velocity. How does it differ from speed?
Velocity is displacement per unit time (a vector with direction). Unlike speed, velocity can be zero or negative and specifies direction.
Define acceleration and state its SI unit.
Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity with time; a = (v − u)/t. SI unit: metre per second squared (m/s²).
What is uniform velocity?
Velocity is uniform when a body covers equal displacements in equal intervals of time, moving in a straight line at constant speed (zero acceleration).
What does negative acceleration (retardation) indicate?
It indicates that the velocity of the body is decreasing with time (the body is slowing down).
State the three equations of motion for uniform acceleration.
v = u + at; s = ut + ½at²; v² = u² + 2as, where u = initial velocity, v = final velocity, a = acceleration, s = displacement, t = time.
On a distance-time graph, what does the slope represent?
The slope of a distance-time graph represents the speed of the body.
On a velocity-time graph, what do the slope and the area under the graph represent?
The slope represents acceleration; the area under the velocity-time graph represents the displacement (distance travelled).
What kind of distance-time graph does a body at rest produce?
A straight horizontal line parallel to the time axis (distance does not change with time).
Define uniform circular motion and explain why it is accelerated motion.
Uniform circular motion is movement along a circular path at constant speed. It is accelerated because the direction of velocity changes continuously, so velocity (a vector) changes.
Convert a speed of 72 km/h into m/s.
72 km/h × (1000/3600) = 20 m/s.
Define force and state its SI unit.
Force is a push or pull that can change the state of rest or motion, shape, or direction of a body. SI unit: newton (N).
State Newton's First Law of Motion.
A body continues in its state of rest or of uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force.
What is inertia, and what is it a measure of?
Inertia is the tendency of a body to resist any change in its state of rest or motion. It is measured by the mass of the body—greater mass means greater inertia.
Name the three types of inertia.
Inertia of rest, inertia of motion, and inertia of direction.
Define momentum and give its formula and SI unit.
Momentum is the product of mass and velocity; p = mv. SI unit: kilogram metre per second (kg·m/s). It is a vector quantity.
State Newton's Second Law of Motion.
The rate of change of momentum of a body is directly proportional to the applied force and takes place in the direction of the force.
Derive the relation F = ma from Newton's Second Law.
Force ∝ rate of change of momentum = (mv − mu)/t = m(v − u)/t = ma. Choosing the unit of force makes the constant 1, so F = ma.
Define one newton of force.
One newton is the force that produces an acceleration of 1 m/s² in a body of mass 1 kg (1 N = 1 kg·m/s²).
State Newton's Third Law of Motion.
To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction; the forces act on two different bodies.
State the law of conservation of momentum.
In the absence of an external force, the total momentum of a system of bodies remains constant before and after their interaction (e.g., collision).
Why are action and reaction forces, though equal and opposite, unable to cancel each other?
Because they act on two different bodies, not on the same body, so they cannot cancel out.
