    A community of living organisms (biotic) interacting with the non-living (abiotic) components of their environment, such as climate, soil and water, functioning together as a unit.

  2. Define a 'food chain' and a 'food web' in an ecosystem.

    A food chain shows the linear feeding relationship and transfer of energy from one organism to the next. A food web is a network of interconnected food chains, showing the more complex feeding relationships in an ecosystem.

  3. What is the difference between a producer, a consumer and a decomposer?

    Producers (e.g. plants) make their own food via photosynthesis. Consumers eat other organisms (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores). Decomposers (e.g. bacteria, fungi) break down dead material, returning nutrients to the soil.

  4. Name the world's large-scale ecosystems (biomes) and give two examples.

    Biomes are global-scale ecosystems defined mainly by climate. Examples include tropical rainforest, hot desert, tundra, temperate deciduous forest, savanna grassland, and coral reef.

  8. What is the nutrient cycle in a tropical rainforest and why is it fragile?

    Nutrients are stored mostly in the biomass (living vegetation), not the soil. Rapid decomposition recycles nutrients quickly. It is fragile because clearing the forest removes the nutrient store, leaving infertile soil prone to leaching.

  9. Define deforestation and give three of its causes.

    Deforestation is the clearing of forests on a large scale. Causes include logging (timber), agriculture/cattle ranching, mineral extraction (mining), road building, energy development (HEP dams), and settlement/population growth.

  13. Describe the climate and one adaptation of a cold environment (polar/tundra).

    Cold environments have temperatures below freezing for much of the year, low precipitation (often falling as snow), and a short growing season. Adaptation: tundra plants grow low to the ground in cushions to resist wind and retain heat; animals have thick fur/blubber.

  14. What are the three layers of the Earth's structure relevant to tectonics?
