What is a gravity-based structure (GBS) platform and what keeps it in place?
A fixed concrete (or steel) platform that rests on the seabed and is held by its own enormous weight rather than piles; the large base caissons also provide oil storage. Suited to firm seabeds and harsh environments like the North Sea.
What is a compliant tower and how does it differ from a rigid jacket?
A narrow, flexible fixed tower that is designed to sway and flex with waves and wind rather than resist them rigidly. It uses far less steel than a jacket and is economic in deeper water (about 450-900 m).

Define 'station keeping' in offshore operations.
The act of maintaining a floating vessel or rig at a fixed horizontal position (and heading) over the wellsite against environmental forces of wind, waves and current. Achieved by mooring systems or dynamic positioning.
What is a spread (catenary) mooring system?
A station-keeping method using multiple anchor lines (chain, wire or synthetic rope) spread around the vessel; restoring force comes from the weight of the catenary line that must be lifted off the seabed when the vessel is displaced.
How does a catenary mooring differ from a taut-leg mooring?
In a catenary mooring the line lies partly on the seabed and resists motion through its self-weight (line meets seabed horizontally, anchor takes only horizontal load). In a taut-leg mooring the line is straight and pre-tensioned at an angle, providing restoring force by line elasticity and requiring anchors that resist both vertical and horizontal loads. Taut-leg gives a smaller footprint, better for deep water.
What is Dynamic Positioning (DP)?
A computer-controlled system that automatically maintains a vessel's position and heading using its own thrusters and propellers, continuously responding to measured environmental forces and position references—no anchors required.
Name the three core subsystems of a DP system.
(1) Position-reference / measurement system (DGPS, acoustic/hydroacoustic, taut wire, gyrocompass, wind sensors), (2) the DP controller/computer (with a mathematical model of the vessel), and (3) the thruster/propulsion system.
What are the IMO DP equipment classes 1, 2 and 3?
Class 1: no redundancy—a single fault causes loss of position. Class 2: redundancy so that no single active-component fault (e.g. thruster, generator) causes loss of position. Class 3: as Class 2 plus protection against fire or flooding in any one compartment (physical separation of redundant systems).
Compare mooring versus dynamic positioning for station keeping.
Mooring: passive, low operating cost, no fuel/thruster power, but limited by water depth, large seabed footprint, slow to relocate. DP: active, rapid setup/relocation, suits ultra-deep water and congested seabeds, but high fuel/power consumption, higher cost and depends on continuous power/thruster availability.
In offshore drilling, what is a conductor (conductor pipe/casing)?
The first and largest-diameter, outermost casing string driven or cemented just below the mudline. It supports the wellhead loads, prevents shallow soil washout/caving, and provides initial structural foundation and a conduit for returns.
What is a marine drilling riser?
A large-diameter pipe connecting the subsea BOP (on the wellhead) to the floating drilling vessel. It guides the drill string, returns drilling mud to the surface, and houses the choke, kill and other auxiliary lines.
What is the purpose of a telescopic (slip) joint in a marine drilling riser?
It is placed at the top of the riser to compensate for the relative vertical motion (heave) between the floating vessel and the fixed riser/BOP, allowing the vessel to move up and down without imposing axial load on the riser.
