  1. Define biology and state the two Greek words from which the term is derived.

    Biology is the scientific study of living organisms. It comes from the Greek words 'bios' (life) and 'logos' (study/discourse).

  2. Which branch of biology deals with the study of fossils and ancient life?

    Paleontology.

  3. Name the branches of biology that study (a) fungi, (b) viruses, and (c) insects.

    (a) Mycology, (b) Virology, (c) Entomology.

  4. Differentiate between morphology and anatomy.

    Morphology is the study of the external form and structure of organisms; anatomy is the study of their internal structure.

  5. What is histology and what is physiology?

    Histology is the microscopic study of tissues; physiology is the study of the functions of different parts of organisms.

  6. Define taxonomy and embryology.

    Taxonomy is the science of naming, identifying and classifying organisms; embryology is the study of the development of an organism from the zygote to a fully formed individual.

  7. List the levels of biological organization in ascending order from atoms to the biosphere.

    Sub-atomic/atomic level → molecular → organelle → cell → tissue → organ → organ system → individual/organism → population → community → ecosystem → biosphere.

  8. At which level of organization do the properties of life first emerge, and why?

    At the cellular level, because the cell is the smallest unit capable of performing all the functions of life.

  9. Define a population and a community in ecology.

    A population is a group of organisms of the same species living in the same area at the same time. A community is an assemblage of different interacting populations in a common environment.

  10. What is an ecosystem?

    An ecosystem is a community of living (biotic) organisms interacting with one another and with their non-living (abiotic) environment in a particular area.

  11. Define the biosphere.

    The biosphere is the part of the Earth (land, water and air) inhabited by living organisms; it is the global ecosystem comprising all communities and their environments.

  12. What is a tissue and what is an organ?

    A tissue is a group of similar cells performing a common function; an organ is a structure made of different tissues working together to perform a particular function.

  13. List the steps of the biological (scientific) method in correct sequence.

    Observation → formulation of a hypothesis → deductions (predictions) → experimentation/testing → forming a theory → establishing a law/principle.

  14. What is a hypothesis, and what are its essential characteristics?

    A hypothesis is a tentative explanation/proposition put forward to account for observations. It must be testable, falsifiable, consistent with known facts, and able to make predictions.

  15. Differentiate between a theory and a law in science.

    A theory is a well-supported, repeatedly tested explanation of a phenomenon; a law (principle) is a uniform, invariable statement about a natural phenomenon that has no known exceptions and is even more thoroughly established than a theory.

  16. What is deductive reasoning versus inductive reasoning?

    Deductive reasoning moves from general principles to specific predictions; inductive reasoning moves from specific observations to general conclusions/principles.

  17. In the malaria example, what hypothesis about the cause of malaria was finally proved correct, and by whom was the link to mosquitoes established?

    The hypothesis that malaria is caused by the protozoan Plasmodium (carried by the female Anopheles mosquito) was proved correct. A. F. A. King listed observations linking malaria to mosquitoes, and Ronald Ross proved Plasmodium is transmitted by Anopheles. 

  18. Why is water described as a polar molecule, and what type of bonding links water molecules?

    Water is polar because the oxygen end is slightly negative and the hydrogen ends slightly positive due to unequal electron sharing. Water molecules are linked by hydrogen bonds.

  19. Name four important properties of water that make it vital for life.

    High specific heat capacity, high heat of vaporization, good solvent (high solvent power), and high cohesion/surface tension (also high density of liquid vs ice and ionizing ability).

  20. Why is water called a universal solvent, and why is this biologically important?

    Its polarity lets it dissolve many ionic and polar substances; this makes water an excellent medium for transport of materials and for biochemical reactions in cells.

  21. What does the high specific heat of water mean for living organisms?

    Water absorbs or releases large amounts of heat with only a small change in its own temperature, helping organisms maintain a stable internal temperature and protecting them from sudden temperature fluctuations.

  22. Explain how the high heat of vaporization of water benefits organisms.

    A large amount of heat is needed to evaporate water, so evaporation (e.g. sweating, transpiration) removes a lot of heat and provides an effective cooling mechanism.
