What is the literal and religious meaning of the word 'Tawheed'?
Literally it means 'to make one' or 'oneness'; religiously it is the belief in the absolute Oneness of Allah in His being, attributes, and worship (no partner, equal, or rival).
What are the three main categories of Tawheed?
Tawheed al-Ruboobiyyah (Oneness of Lordship/creation and control), Tawheed al-Uloohiyyah (Oneness of worship), and Tawheed al-Asma wa al-Sifat (Oneness of Allah's names and attributes).
What is the opposite of Tawheed, and why is it the gravest sin in Islam?
Shirk (associating partners with Allah). It is the gravest sin because it denies Allah's Oneness, and the Quran states Allah may forgive all sins except dying upon shirk (Surah An-Nisa 4:48).
Define 'Risalat' in Islamic belief.
Risalat is the belief in the prophethood and messengership of Allah's chosen prophets, who convey divine guidance to humanity; belief in all prophets, with Muhammad (PBUH) as the last (Khatam an-Nabiyyeen), is obligatory.
What does 'Khatam an-Nabiyyeen' mean and to whom does it refer?
It means 'Seal/Last of the Prophets' and refers to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH); after him no new prophet will come (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:40).
In which year (CE) and city was Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) born?
He was born in 570 CE (the Year of the Elephant) in Makkah.
What were the titles given to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) before prophethood due to his character?
As-Sadiq (the Truthful) and Al-Ameen (the Trustworthy).
At what age and where did Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) receive the first revelation, and through which angel?
At the age of 40, in the Cave of Hira (Mount Noor near Makkah), through Angel Jibreel (Gabriel).
What were the first verses of the Quran revealed to the Prophet (PBUH)?
The first five verses of Surah Al-Alaq (96), beginning with 'Iqra bismi Rabbika alladhi khalaq' ('Read in the name of your Lord who created').
How long was the Makkan period of the Prophet's mission and what was its main focus?
About 13 years (610–622 CE); its main focus was establishing the core beliefs of Islam — Tawheed, prophethood, the Hereafter — and calling people away from idolatry.
What is the Hijrah, and in which year did it occur?
The Hijrah was the migration of the Prophet (PBUH) and Muslims from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE; it marks the start of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar.
What was the main focus of the Madinan period of the Prophet's mission?
Building the Muslim community and Islamic state — establishing detailed laws (worship, social, economic, legal), treaties, and the practical application of Islam in society.
What was the Charter (Constitution) of Madinah?
An agreement drafted by the Prophet (PBUH) regulating rights and duties of Muslims, Jews, and other tribes of Madinah, establishing it as one community/state with mutual defense and justice.
Name the first male, female, and child to accept Islam.
First man: Abu Bakr (RA); first woman: Khadijah (RA); first child: Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA).
What was the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah and when was it signed?
A 10-year peace treaty between Muslims and the Quraysh of Makkah in 6 AH (628 CE); though seemingly disadvantageous, the Quran called it a 'clear victory' as it allowed Islam to spread peacefully.
When did the Conquest of Makkah (Fath Makkah) take place and what was its notable feature?
In 8 AH (630 CE); it was a largely bloodless conquest, after which the Prophet (PBUH) granted general amnesty and idols around the Kaaba were destroyed.
Define 'Akhlaq' in Islam.
Akhlaq means moral conduct, character, and ethics — the inner traits and outward behavior a Muslim should adopt, such as honesty, patience, humility, and kindness.
What is 'Hadith' and what are its two main parts?
Hadith is a recorded saying, action, or approval of the Prophet (PBUH). Its two parts are the Sanad (chain of narrators) and the Matn (the actual text/content).
Define 'Sunnah' and distinguish it from Hadith.
Sunnah is the practice and way of life of the Prophet (PBUH) — his sayings, actions, and approvals. Hadith is the verbal/written report that records the Sunnah.
What is the difference between Hadith Qudsi and Hadith Nabawi?
Hadith Qudsi conveys Allah's meaning in the Prophet's words; Hadith Nabawi is the Prophet's own statement. Both differ from the Quran, whose words and meaning are directly from Allah.
Why is the Sunnah considered the second source of Islamic law?
Because it explains, details, and demonstrates the Quran's commands (e.g., how to pray, fast, perform Hajj); the Quran itself orders obedience to the Prophet (Surah Al-Hashr 59:7).
