What is a 'premise' in an argument?
A statement offered as evidence or a reason intended to support or justify the conclusion.
What is the 'conclusion' of an argument?
The main claim or position that the argument's premises are intended to establish or prove.
What is an 'assumption' in argument analysis?
An unstated premise that the argument takes for granted; a missing link the argument needs to be valid or true.
What common 'indicator words' signal a conclusion?

In CLAT Logical Reasoning, how do you identify the main conclusion when there are multiple claims?
Use the 'Therefore Test': the statement that all others support, and which itself supports nothing else, is the main conclusion.
What does it mean to 'strengthen' an argument?
To add a new fact or consideration that makes the conclusion more likely to be true, supports an assumption, or rules out an alternative explanation.
What does it mean to 'weaken' an argument?
To add a fact that makes the conclusion less likely, attacks an assumption, or offers an alternative explanation for the evidence.
Which part of an argument should a strengthen/weaken answer choice usually target?
The argument's central assumption (the gap between premises and conclusion), not the explicitly stated premises or conclusion.
In strengthen/weaken questions, why is introducing an alternative cause a powerful weakener?
For a causal conclusion, an alternative cause shows the stated cause may not be responsible, breaking the premise-conclusion link.
What is the difference between an inference and an assumption?
An inference is a conclusion that follows FROM the stated information; an assumption is something the argument needs and takes for granted BEHIND the stated information.
What rule governs a valid 'must be true' inference question?
The correct answer must be fully supported by the passage with no outside knowledge; if it could be false given the passage, it is not a valid inference.
What is a 'deductive' argument versus an 'inductive' argument?
Deductive: if the premises are true the conclusion must be true (certainty). Inductive: the premises make the conclusion probable but not certain (generalisation).
What is 'validity' versus 'soundness' in deductive logic?
Validity means the conclusion follows logically from the premises; soundness means the argument is valid AND all its premises are actually true.
Define the fallacy 'ad hominem'.
Attacking the person making the argument rather than addressing the argument itself.
Define the 'straw man' fallacy.
Misrepresenting or oversimplifying an opponent's position to make it easier to attack, then refuting the distorted version.
Define the fallacy 'post hoc ergo propter hoc'.
Assuming that because event B followed event A, A must have caused B; confusing sequence with causation.
Define the 'circular reasoning' (begging the question) fallacy.
Using the conclusion itself as a premise, so the argument assumes what it is trying to prove.
